Spoilers! This module was a ton of fun. The cave was great for the players to explore. I ran this at a local game store, and my group discovered the secret tunnels and went straight to the final boss, and ended up doing the dungeon backwards. The alchemical vials were all really funny and the players loved them, I defeinitely recommend putting one of each for the players to use during the fight. My only issue with the module is that it doesn't really provide any details on the town of Blasingdell, so if the players decide to go there before the cave, you kind of just have to improvise the whole town. Other than that it was great!

My 2nd favorite adventure of all time. The Kobolds are really fun and deadly. Dropping a fireball on a tier 1 table is always hilarious. I just noticed for the first time it's a 2 hour module though. I have always run it as a four hour module easy as the player get more and more paranoid and slow as they progress. Highly recommend!

Fun short adventure. There's a limit to how much can be accomplished in only 2 hours. Solid lead-in to Forge of Fury. Wish there had been some more hooks for interesting roleplay -- more motivations or complexity to the kobolds, maybe?

Very good dungeon crawl that capitalizes on kobolds ability to stay hidden, be vicious and deadly. Last encounter is rather deadly but it leaves a lot of options up to DM so it can be played out in an entertaining yet challenging way for players. Fantastic prelude to Forge of Fury.

This is one of the classics of the Adventurers League modules and really shows just how deadly kobolds can be, including examples as to their cunning, inventiveness and tactics that can be used in addition to their punishing trap expertise. The tie-in to Forge of Fury is excellent, and the use of Kobold Common to describe the traps (as well as the unique creations of the more intelligent kobolds). Well done!

Great module, has a very old-school, dungeon crawling feel. The kobolds encountered are diverse and provide for some interesting encounters, especially the fight with the sorcerer at the end. The only things I would change would be a more detailed map with trap locations, and the big trap not costing 1 downtime day to mine through.

Definitely one of the better adventuresw I have played through. Always an enjoyable experience for the players with enough danger involved to keep them on their toes throughout. Everyone has so far tripped the first trap...

Kobolds here are not just silly, cowardly pushovers, but the mad inventors, trapmakers, skirmishers, and powerful sorcerers that they always could be. Sure, they can be silly too, collecting funny trinkets, writing notes without much thought, calling out juvenile insults, and their tactics can easily backfire on themselves, but when the entire warren seems to be sniping with blowguns at you from the tunnels, it can easily turn deadly. This adventure ties in especially well with some of the creatures in Forge of Fury, and can serve as a suitable hook into that adventure. The tricks, traps, tactics, trinkets/treasure, and reactions of the warren to the adventurers' presence are laid out well, and the overall module is engaging and provides ample roleplaying opportunities. If the party manages to make it to the end without taking too much attrition, the final encounter is surmountable should the DM follow the suggested tactics and does not go absolutely all out with what the spell list can accomplish. The adventure is liable to run 3+ hours and is not particularly friendly to lower-T1 characters. Even with all these caveats, it is a blast to run and play, and can easily be a staple module to fit into an open time slot.

Your classic dungeon crawl into a kobold warren. It is intended as an extended intro module for Yawning Portal, but it plays quite well on its own. It gives many different characters a chance to shine, what with traps, fights, and some lateral thinking possible. It can be somewhat difficult to run as written, as the attacks from the kobolds behind the walls is somewhat unclear and can be difficult to remember. It's a good one to run on quick notice if you've spent some time getting the map prepared and with some real work a copy of the map blown up into playable size and cut up to allow placement of small parts one at a time can really add some flair. Difficulties include the map being written as 1 inch equaling 10 feet, meaning the map feels small unless it's made quite big by going to 2 inch squares. Unfortunately, it's not as good of a module with the new season 8 rules, as even the magic item is available to all players already.

Season 6 was sparse for AL specific modules and this one serves up an alternate entrance for Forge of Fury. Overal an enjoyable module but probably better suited for a more tactical party than my normal collection of store random players (many of which are new). This adventure also lacked NPCs outside of the dungeon and generally the TotYP adventures are too long to run at the store so it felt disconnected from anything else we were running. The final encounter has a spell selection that I wouldn't use for a Tier 1 but may be appropriate if the entire group is 3rd or higher. With the changes to advancement in season 8 I think it would be difficult to pair this with Forge of Fury since the module itself is already too long for a 3-4 level span and this extra 2 hours may put it over.

This is a good fast-paced, linear dungeon crawl. It can be a bit challenging for the DM to keep up with all the behind-the-scenes activity (kobolds spying on and attacking the party, falling back, repeating the cycle). I've had players come up with some creative ways to deal with that issue, so be sure to encourage a little out of the box thinking. As noted in the module, the encounters with the kobold inventors can vary widely, depending on what they throw at the party and how the dice fall. The good thing is, that makes it more fun and challenging! This adventure can be difficult without good opportunities for a short rest. Another reason for the players to think on their feet and not just charge ahead blindly - though that can be entertaining too!

Depending on how much the characters talk with Sik'Garuk, they may or may not discover the linkage with Forge of Fury. That doesn't really matter to this adventure, but if your players are like me and enjoy unraveling the mysteries as they progress it would be good to try to work the information in. If the party destroys the kobolds before learning who they work for, you could try to insert some evidence - maybe a small shrine with their boss' name scrawled in draconic or something?

A Thousand Tiny Deaths is a frantic and punishing dungeon crawl which will test most adventurers-- but its character, attention to detail, use of D&D's more unique monsters, and unusually high level of quality materials will endear itself to most players and any DM who takes the time to prepare.

Things I bring up when recommending this adventure to other DMs:

  • The adventure is full of character if you're looking for it-- all the traps and leadership have in-world names and personalities.
  • The environment is unlike virtually any other dungeon crawl among Adventurers League modules: not all passages in the dungeon can be traversed by the adventurers, making their encroaching in unwelcome territory more than a map-clearing exercise. The result is a test of creativity-- or endurance-- for the party.
  • Player Handout 2 is beautiful-- a handwritten and handdrawn page eschewing most of the MS Paint motif that AL modules have channeled with stunning regularity in favor of in-game styled pen-and-ink renditions. It's a shame Handout 1 deferred to a well-known font, but Handout 2 is a demonstration of the highest levels of quality that AL handouts can reach.

Things you'll want to keep in mind if you choose to run the adventure:

  • Note down the names of the rooms, and locations of traps, on your copy of the map. The dungeon isn't a straight line, and its elements have more details than can be expressed in tiny one or two sentence notes-- you'll find the adventure will flow better for you if you're referring to the original documents during the adventure itself. Just remember to read ahead while you're party's talking to refresh yourself on rooms coming up and you'll be fine doing this.
  • Read the unique creature and inventor stat blocks well in advance, and get familiar with their effects-- and limitations. These are creatures you'll want dedicated note cards for.
  • This adventure, despite its strong character, is punishing with a vengeance. The party isn't given any opportunity to rest, and characters below the APL of 3rd level will have difficulty reaching the end in one piece without strong party cooperation or thorough preparations in town.
