These are some reaelly good introduction quests that can be used for more experinced players. You get all the classic monsters goblins, gnolls and even a beholder.

This was the first module I ran (oops, finished it a year ago and only reviewing now) and my first experience DMing. I found that it was very obvious that it was 3 different people writing 1/3 each because the style/voice changed a bit. Some sections were easier to follow than others, etc. I also used it as an intro to D&D for a completely new player, and I found that it really showcased the three pillars well, and provided for all sorts of weird scenarios. I remember changing some stuff around near the end of it... some things just didn't make a ton of sense / didn't offer strong motivations for the players so I had to pull some stuff out. They wanted to know where all the other wannabe adventurers flocking to the town were and why they weren't helping, so I had to really play up the psychic waves thing and say that they were the newest group to town and that their detour a few days out to the yuan-ti pit and back got them out of the area long enough that the psychic effect wasn't as strong vs them (cue making some madness saves and shit to save face at this point...). I also found that travel time was really glossed over; it was written without any mention of how far away the yuan-ti area was for example. If you're trying to use the Forgotten Realms as a setting for a larger campaign and don't catch this travel time thing early on, you might find your version of the Realms to be quite a bit smaller. The other thing was the dreamstones and nightmare stones. They're not explained at all, not even whether they're the real deal or fakes, simply that they can be sold (for practically nothing) in town... kinda good and bad depending. So anyways that's the story of how I have an entire campaign that centres around what was intended to be a random loot item mentioned offhand in a module lol. All in all, I do think it's a good module, especially for introducing new players, and it definitely sets up the idea that monsters just exist in the world and the solution is not always "kill all the monsters"... but new DMs should be aware that it isn't a module that you can pick up and play without reading/highlighting through first.

It seems like they are good adventuers, but the lack of edditing makes them a bit confusing. One thing I disliked about them was that their was no overview in the beginning of the module, so you have to read the entire module to be able to know what happens.

Overall, the adventures seem fun, but there is a distinct lack of edditing on this module.

There are some writing/editing issues like others mentioned. There's an encounter that is a lot of fun (the hag home) but nothing about it made sense as far as story to me. You're going to want to read over that encounter several times and develop your own way of handling it and preparing for your players reactions. What is detailed in the description of the encounter seems to plan on waving the characters away and trying to offer no explanation of anyone's behavior (which I suppose makes some sense) or explain certain items. I don't know about other DM's but if I ran that portion as-written it would derail the entire game as the players become intensely focused on getting answers. Also, surprising to see an adventure say "their stat blocks are not included here because they are not meant to be fought," when the PCs enter the situation believing those creatures to be the villains. As written it all hangs on the real villain shouting to the world that they're the real villain. It's a super fun battle IF you can stear the players in the right direction and you manage to keep the narrative clear.

Not only are the maps simply pen drawings on grid paper, the creator then lined up the grid layer in Fantasy Grounds incorrectly so you'll have to re-grid every map.

It's a great set of adventures, one of my favorites. I've DM'ed them all on two ocations so far. One point to keep and mind, both times I've run them I've found that Adventures 1-4 are can definatly be run in 1 hour. But 5 & 6 are more like 2 hour adventures.

Wonderful and simple in approuch and the monster progression is perfecly made for all new players to get a feeling of tier 1 dangers. It is simply a staple to play if you enjoy the starter boxes.

A great intro set of mini adventures to get a group started. I did just that with my podcast group and, with some creative license, built on some of the threads provided. As some other reviewers have noted there were issues with the editing which made some sections a little confusing or unclear but overall these ran smoothly and we had a great time in Phandalin!

The poor writing and lack of editing really hurt my rating on this one. Part-way through the 2nd adventure, they switch the name Sildar Hallwinter (who was an important NPC in LMOP and throughout this adventure) to Silas... What the heck? The adventures themselves are pretty quick and handy for 1 hour sessions. There's some good variety in the content.

It would get a better rating from me if not for the god-awful writing. Who thought it was okay to replace "adventurers" with "characters?" There are a bunch of other writing and formatting problems as well, but that one's the most prominent and the most annoying. And it's been a while since it was released, so I'm surprised nobody's bothered to make an update. That's just poor handling.

This series of intro modules serves as a good intro not only for new players, but also for a new DM. There's a good mix of combat and thinking required. The combat scenarios take place over a mix of different environments, including in the trees. The issues I have with the module (and thus rating it a 4) is that the interaction within the town seems a bit stilted with the main NPCs who run the town. They are extremely stereotyped and one-dimensional. Also, there's an issue where you really want characters to be at 2nd level when they start the 3rd mission but they don't quite have enough XP if they've only played In Volo's Wake. They are just short. However, there are the standard rules for adjusting the challenge rating and that helps, but the DM still has to be careful.

A fun and entertaining set of adventures. I ran them with a newer group of players and they enjoyed the various mechanics and styles of play.

This is a great set of modules for new players. Each one has a different feel, so it serves almost as a sampler of what D&D can be. The smaller segments also allow for more debriefings with the players to get a sense of what they liked and didn't like about each type of encounter, allowing both the DM and players to be pleasently surprised by things they unexpectedly enjoyed.

It does have one major issue, and that is there are a few incorrect words which hurts it's readabilty, and slows down the flow of descriptions.

While running this module the in-game-play had a pleasant fluid flow to it that allowed players to adapt and emerse themselves more. (I've run part 1 three times and each time the players tried their hardest to aid the 'poor little rich noble' at the begining of the game starting with re-attaching his ear.) If anyone needs food ideas for the hags to offer players consider watching old Addams family episodes and using some of the odder sounding dishes, like toadstool soufle and henbane tea. I found it even funnier when one accepted and I offered 'goblin gravy' to go with it.

Great for running for people that are new to Adventure's League and D&D in general. Helps encourage group tactics and also note taking. Also a bunch of nice easter eggs for anyone that bought Volo's Guide.

I really liked being able to have my players interact with the high end monsters from Volo's guide, but I was annoyed by the lack of details inside the hag's cabin. When I initially prepared the adventure, I didn't notice that there was no description of any of the ten rooms, and I ended up having to make them up on the fly. A minor thing, for sure, but it would have been nice.
