Great idea and role playing module but you will need to do some penciling in on the clues in the module so you can know who did what. And I would create a clue sheet for each player. My group last night loved it due to role playing in the part 1 but the comedy of errors during the climax of part 1 and lack of why should they care to continue had us stop just into part 2. And they broke me. 3 times.

All investigation, no payoff If your players love rambling the streets of fantasy cities knocking on doors and asking questions, they're going to love Flames of Kythorn, which presents one of the most sprawling investigative arenas in an Adventurer's League module to this point (although its immediate follow-up, Breath of the Yellow Rose, does it one better). Unfortunately, there's little to the adventure other than the investigation, and there's no real mystery to solve through all those questions - the villains have no real motivation, and it's merely a matter of locating them so that the combat can begin. Flames of Kythorn deserves credit for an unusual and memorable premise - magical fiery paintings, an inexplicable act of terrorism, a journey through the Mulmaster art scene - but none of it really adds up to much, resulting in an unsatisfying conclusion. Too many red herrings in the investigation can also leave players spinning in circles or mounting complicated and unnecessary heists, and setting them straight can require explicitly telling them that they're heading down the wrong path. Promising but flawed.

Flames of Kythorn is my go to adventure to run for new players with great stakes that allow the players to fail without it being lethal, however the high AC of mid enemies draws combat to a snails pace, and the on fire effect can easily kill a player with low hit points (knocking them out and causing automatic death saves). Otherwise, although it is quite a flawed moduel, it has a charm to it; It is always enjoyable to watch the players have a tour of Mulmaster while seeing some of the best and worst of the city as the clock runs down of an innocent Zora's life.

This was one of the better Adventures for my style of play that I have seen in Adventure League. There is a large RP setting to start off and all the combats except the final one are optional based on RP and social skills. The adventure is more of an investigation than anything else with the players going from location to location looking for clues. The end goals are a little weak, but the major NPCs are fairly well described.

Despite its flaws, I really enjoyed this adventure, and also my players. It is all investigative with very little combat. The first scene is really interesting to play, with a lot of roleplaying and an unexpected twist. The final scene is extremely evocative to narrate.

A mystery-type, heavily flavored module. The opening is a little weak and takes some DM pressure to move things along/generate motivation, but the number of interesting characters and locations as well as the flow of the plot is a nice change of pace from the typical formula. Fun-level can definitely be table-dependent - hack 'n slash types may get bored.

This module has its flaws (story hook, villain behind it all, end battle), but I've run it twice and both groups had a great time. Once players are on board with wandering into the tavern, a roleplay-focused group will get to shine. Players enjoyed getting to interact with NPCs and start figuring out something was awry even before the conflict began, and tracking down the culprit gave good opportunities for players to explore and puzzle out the mystery. This isn't an adventure for combat-focused parties, though. The combat encounters are dull.

Pro

  • Roleplay opportunities
  • Exploration and clue-gathering
  • Thematic components and connections to other season 2 modules

Con

  • Weak combat encounters
  • DMs may need to come up with a better hook to get players into the tavern in the first place

The hook felt weak. Lets show up to a party with nobles..just...because...free alchohol? Good thing I had a dwarf heavy group ;)

This is a lot of investigation as oposed to combat. Not that there's anything wrong with that...The group had fun trying to figure out what was going on etc. If your group are a bunch of murder hobos you should probably grab a different module. If your group likes to focus on role playing and figuring out who dun it then this is for them.

Could easily take more than expected run time depending on which clues they end up with. Might just as easily get done in a couple hours if the clues lead them to the final area early on.

This is a great adventure if you enjoy the storytelling aspect of D&D. It's essentially an urban mystery story—it involves a lot of investigation and is heavy on roleplay, light on combat. Players have lots of opportunities to hobnob with nobles, explore different areas of the city, dig through suspects' garbage, and all that good stuff. If your players prefer a more kick-in-the-door style of game, they might get a little antsy, but if they like chatting up NPCs and playing gumshoe, they'll love this adventure.

It's an interesting story but I found it hard to give my players enough clues to figure the mystery out on themselves. Doril Cire is maybe the weakest written character and there's next to no chance to get to know Andrik. Instead the story seems to convolute to Azak Throm, which is a bit misleading, but not misleading enough to be a real plot twist. Most fights are Ok, the final encounter could be scaled down a little.

Interesting module, it gave my players multiple options to explore. I also liked that it wasn't just a hack-and-slash module with no thinking on the player's part.

Tons of interesting roleplay here! It feels like an old school Sherlock Holmes book.

This is a really fun module, however, it could be better. If you don't tell your party this is heavy investigation game before hand, things can pan out quickly.

A good module, but not a great module. I have both played and DMed this adventure. The first encounter could seriously damage the party if they become scattered and unfocused on the objective (I had someone "help" with NPC healing). This adventure does have a time limit of sorts built in - so if your party is the type to expend every resource and demand a long rest, then you will have a long session of grumpy players. Another set of Mulmaster nobles gets involved, so depending on how things go, they could become patrons, or enemies! I found the freeform nature of the final fight(s) challenging to run, but if you do not have a rules lawyer at the table then you can make it work.

Fun Module. Good chances for RPing. Several interesting combats. If your players like figuring out mysteries this should be good.
