Lebor Óe In Dea
Publisher: Onyx Path Publishing
by MICHAEL M. [Verified Purchaser]

While a lot of work has clarly gone into this, and I'm sure it's a valuable deep dive reference into Irish mythology, I was disappointed that it was just that -- a dive into Irish myth with Scion stats added. I would have enjoyed a lot more imaginative work in what the Tuatha de Danann can bring to a Scion chronicle, including perspectives on how the pantheon can relate to the modern world. This leaves all of that work up to the reader, merely providing research material. If you're looking for Gae Bolga shotguns and urban Dullahans, you're not going to find much here.

New Psionic Powers

This really hit the spot! All the powers I needed to give my psychic characters some more variety, and to fill in the holes of "classic" psionic powers. Thanks, Steve!

A fun take on how Torg would translate to the big screen! Honestly, I would love to see this developed into a TV series!

Savage Worlds Sci Fi World Builder Toolkit
Publisher: Pinnacle Entertainment
by Michael M. [Verified Purchaser]

Very nice. A comprehensive look at various forms of science fiction, with an eye to getting the GM up and running as quickly as possible. With the toolkits, it's tempting to never look at another official setting again! Of course, the official settings are so COOL that it's not a strong temptation, but still.

LIKED: A complete planet creation system, notes on aliens, and the most thorough look at psionics I've seen. Everything I need is there to be dipped into.

DISLIKED: Cyberware, cyberspace and starships are such fundamental "world" elements in sci-fi that it was frustrating to have them in the Gear Toolkit instead of the World Builder. Overall, it feels like the Science Fiction Toolkits are one book that got cut up into parts. I think I'd have no problem buying the book, mind you.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Mean Streets (XPG): The RPG of Classic Film Noir
Publisher: Deep7
by Michael M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/30/2006 00:00:00

This game is impressive and ambitious. It attempts to recreate the feel of film noir, specifically the noir crime dramas of the 30s through the 50s. The simple but effective system stays out of the way, allowing the book to concentrate on translating a film genre to RPG. A lot of the advice might be better suited to short storyline-campaigns rather than ongoing stories -- the one place I found it lacking was on addressing the serial nature of certain detective-heroes. For people looking for something different for a night or three, it's an excellent purchase.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Tri-Stat dX: Core System Role-Playing Game - GOO-18-001
Publisher: Dyskami Publishing Company
by Michael M.
Date Added: 11/09/2004 09:27:49

The Tri-Stat system raised to its' penultimate form. Flexible, detailed characters and fast, easy rules. A system that adapts to different power levels and genres without a whole lot of skull-sweat. I have found the one RPG I can't do without.

Try it, you'll like it. And if you don't -- hey, it was free!!!!!

Cute and Fuzzy Cockfighting Seizure Monsters (BESM Second Edition) – GOO-02-105
Publisher: Dyskami Publishing Company
by Michael M.
Date Added: 09/28/2004 18:54:51

Cute & Fuzzy Seizure Monsters is at once a supplement for the Pet Monster genre of games, and a scathing parody of it. As an adaptation of the genre it works well, giving all the needed Attributes, Monster advice and plot hooks needed to get a good, meaty Pet Monsters game off the ground. Remember this, those of you who love the genre.

The majority of space in this book is devoted to cutting satire and criticism of the genre. The author (and GoO founder Mark McKinnon) seem to have strong objections to the 'cockfighting' mentality of the game genre, and go to great lengths to point out the hypocrisy of selling such a brutalizing lifestyle primarily to young children. At times, it seemed to me that the satire overwhelmed the game material, making the book only usable for those interested in parodying the genre.

Overall though, for those willing to take the text with the intended grain of salt, there's a lot of solid, useful advice here for a serious game within the genre, maybe even one that recognizes that most of the anime about Pet Monsters out there does address the 'cockfighting' nature of the hobby.
