Heroic Maps - Storeys: Stronghold of the Elf Mage

Wow wow WOW! The complexity...the thoughtful details...it's unique...it's beautiful...it's inside...it's outside...WOW! I love how it all flows with the tree, and isn't just the same continuing stairs going up like a tower. I love the out of focus continuation of elements as you ascend. And the details are very much appreciated...chairs slightly askew instead of mirrored, the natural wood desk, the lighting and textures...all of it makes for one amazing piece of work. This is definitely in my top 3 from you guys.

Just a quick review. I agree with pretty much everything Rachel B. said, and the fact that you get all these unique environments and ideas plus 7 soundscapes...very good bargain. If you use the Forgotten Realms campaign setting you can plug these environments into a new (undiscovered) large section of Undermountain, or even underground areas in Chult or Maztica (though perhaps swap out a few of the inhabitants for those areas). It could be a pocket dimension or the beginning to some other plane of existence. There's plenty more ideas you'll discover on your own as your read through this unique accessory, and I recommend giving it a try.

Demihuman Deities (2e)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast

I would like to start off by saying I own the hard copies of all three within this series (Faiths & Avatars, Powers & Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities) and the content is excellent. You can read my review of F&A under that title where I give a number of kudos and reasons for purchasing. I purchased the PDF copy of F&A, and was very happy with my purchase because it was a proper PDF. It was properly bookmarked, the text was searchable and selectable, etc. Because I was happy with the F&A PDF, I moved forward with purchasing the PDFs for P&P and DD.

THIS PDF for Demihuman Deities is abolutely terrible!!! The scan quality is quite poor, it's not searchable, and most of the pages do not contain text...just the poor-quality scan image of the page. If you do stumble upon some actual text, it's completely garbled and unuseable....here's an example:

Novices of UrnenIan are known as Fanhlinga. Full prieni of He Who Must Be are ham M Vwala of the Black Hound. In mending d e r of rank, the tides wcd by Urogalanan priesw are Esrth Embracer, Soil Dig. per, Clay Potter, Dlarun Smith, Grave Guardian, Crypt Sentinel, Vault Manhal, Barrow Warden, and Black Hound. High-ranking priesw have unique individual titles. Specialty priests are known M grimwardens. The clergy of Urogalan includes hairfeet (E%)s,to uts (65%), and tallfellows (10%). Urogalan'a clergy Is nearly evenly divided between specialty priesta (54%) and clerics (46%) and between men (55%) and women (45%). Doma: Enrth la the glver and the receiver of life, providing shelter, food, and wealth to those whox tces embrace it. The sacred 0011 la to be revered M the mantle of Thm who Have Been and the shelter of Thox Who Will Be. The thanatopsls of He Who Muat h meals that death to be embraced a i the nnmral end of life and in doing IO gives honor to life.

I'm beyond dissatisfield, but I'm trying to maintain a civil tone here. The publisher needs to fix this and provide a proper PDF like they did for F&A. I highly recommend NOT purchasing this title until the publisher fixes it!

This is one of my favorite (definitely in the top 3) sourcebooks for 2E Forgotten Realms because it provides such great depth of detail for each of the deities within its pages. Just reading the entries sparks idea after idea for ways to make the various faiths in this setting come alive for the players, from divine guidance and intervention to religious/political intrigue. A player reading the entry for their patron deity gains a much better understanding of the faith, which can help to add depth in how they roleplay their character...rather than just a deity's name on their character sheet.

The follow-up sourcebooks (Demihuman Deities and Powers & Pantheons) follow suit. All three soucebooks together provide a LOT more information than the 3E Faiths and Pantheons - which tried to capture the FR deities in one sourcebook, but with much shorter entries - and are invaluable to DM and player alike. Another great benefit with these books is that most of the material (fluff like dogma, holy days and ceremonies, priestly ranks and attire, adventuring garb, centers of worship, etc.) is free of mechanics, so it applies to any edition you want to play. The deity-specific spells and the avatar entries can be adapted by an experiened DM.

F&A, DD and P&P are still my go-to books when I'm looking for unique, character-specific plot hooks, ideas for creating interesting puzzles, a supernatural reason for why X happened (or to introduce a strange occurance), ideas for unique magic items, or anything else related to FR deities.

This is a very good loop that sounds pretty much like you'd expect...

  • chickens, goats, pigs as you walk through town, with some cows in the distance
  • a flock of geese flying overhead (or around a nearby lake?).
  • a wagon rolling by
  • sounds from a blacksmith shop nearby
  • etc.

Well done! :)
