100 Alternate Magic Mishap Table - A rules supplement for Forbidden Lands

I love the variety this brings to magic mishaps. It makes magic mishaps very exciting: will the caster end up with a minor inconvenience, a lasting quirk, or a devastating disability? Who knows!

The Dark Eye - Core Rules

I first encountered this setting in the game Chains of Satinav by Daedalic Entertainment, and I mostly picked up the Corebook on a whim--and I'm so glad I did! This has quickly become one of my favorite RPGs. The learning curve is slightly steep, but I find the rules to be quite elegant. Character creation is unfortunately quite complex and comprises the biggest obstacle, but in play the rules are straightforward. I appreciate that this system has enough "crunch" to allow for a lot of character customization but is straightforward enough to not get in the way of the storytelling. I can see why this is the number one RPG in Germany; I'd call it far superior to DnD in both rules and setting.

Cairn RPG

I have to say this system, based on the d12, is quite unique, as elegant as it is simple. The simplicity of the rules and the tone of the setting would make this a great RPG to introduce to kids, but it's also easily mature enough for adult gamers. The text is also very readable, with an entertaining dry commentary. I do have two minor criticisms: the text references Awakened badgers a number of times yet offers no stats for playing badgers, and in quite a few places the text is plagued by run on sentences and typos that hurt readability. I'd love to see additional sources that perhaps detail new locations and additional Awakened animals, like the missing badger (there's also an illustration of an Awakened red fox that would make a welcome addition).
