Fast and simple point-based ruleset. Lots of gear. Psychic powers. Starship rules. All the basics are covered.

The book includes a 'broad strokes' kitchen sink campaign setting including pastiches of the Empire (Star Wars), the Federation (Star Trek), and a more 'corporate' empire which has a more grey morality. Each region is touched on in brief and campaign ideas are provided for each (rebels vs the Empire, space rangers, free traders, space explorers, etc.). Also many species of humanoid aliens are mentioned in brief, some fairly original but most being pastiches of familiar races from pop-culture (predators, xenomorphs, klingons, hutts, etc.)

The Bestiary and Starship Gallery are extensive. The Art is black and white, but very strong, about as good as black and white art can be, with many illustrations of ships and characters. The PDF is not bookmarked.

Avalon’s Solo Adventures System, Sidetrack Adventures, Book 1
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/04/2019 13:47:19

A series of short unconnected "Choose your own adventure" style solos for a group of PCs. Excellent variety in the adventures, and more forgiving than others by these authors: manageable combats and opportunities to triumph even after failed skill rolls. There is a good balance between story awards and experience points from fighting. There is also a mechanic to make combats more challenging for stronger groups.

A possible improvement for Vicious Secrets: succeeding in part 5 ought to gain the information in part 8. In A Few Coins, it would be better if failure in part 19 directed the PCs to, say, part 17; part 29 refers to non-existent part 37, perhaps part 33 was intended.

Recommended. A good place to start for anyone wishing to try this type of campaign.

Avalon’s Solo Adventure System, King’s Guard, Book 1
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/03/2019 05:54:01

A series of adventures in which the PCs protect the royal family (especially the Princess) and their interests. Good variety: plenty of (winnable) combat; other skills tested; some strategic decisions to make. The nature of the quests leads to (mostly) similar endings, but different NPCs may get involved, with different fates. Replay value.

Would have benefitted from a further edit: for example on p. 26 you are told a certain NPC is alive, but in the next mini-paragraph he is declared dead; bullywugs suddenly become goblins on p.99, Part 43. A jousting tournament could have been a nice addition; also a formal ball with dancing skills tested, and verbal sparring.

Recommended.

Avalon’s Solo Adventure System
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/26/2019 08:34:47

A substantial collection of short solo (no referee) adventures, which build to create a bigger story. They follow the conventions of Choose Your Own Adventure Books e.g. "if you pursue the thief, go to paragraph 7". Events are in motion, but quite what role the PCs will play will depend on their choices/good fortune.

Strengths: (i) there is a great deal of material; (ii) whilst combat is the main feature, other abilities are tested, and there are strategic decisions to make; (iii) replay value, as different choices/outcomes could lead to a very different sequence of adventures played; (iv) a subsystem which keeps track of how well you are regarded in various organisations, including romances; (v) dungeon delves are handled by random selection of rooms from a big list, adding uncertainty and excitement.

Cautions/Weaknesses: (i) Some encounters may prove too tough for the levels indicated, e.g. four mummies for a low level group. I suggest an old school mentality of altering any "impossible" encounter, in the example you could make the mummies very susceptible to fire, or reduce their numbers; (ii) the running marriage score makes good sense for Princess Jenn, but less so for other possible paramours: bespoke scores such as +2 marriage (Jenn), +1 marriage (Elinos) might be better, also a male love interest could be included.

Recommended.

Lightspeed
by Geoffrey W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/22/2019 20:06:28

Two stars. There was potential here. Lots of people like it because it's a mash of star wars and star trek, along with a MESS of other sci fi properties with the numbers filed off. I wanted to like it for the same reasons, but I can't.

Ultimately it's too slim on information for anything OTHER than the Federation, and even in that regard it really only tells you details about how the StarForce and AstroPol operate. The Empire, the Old Earth Empires... the core book basically disregards them. Even the Criminal sections don't mention much other than AstroPol. It's really disappointing. Hell, there isn't even detailed information on the history of anything other than Human expansion in the galaxy. Each alien species has its own little blurb in its own little section, and other than those blurbs they're barely mentioned in the text of the setting chapter.

I know that there are other source books, but for even the most basic information about the structure of these other portions of the galaxy to be nearly completely absent from the core game? It's egregious. I haven't even gotten to the system information yet. I'll read it eventually, maybe the Fuzion system itself is worth the purchase of this book... otherwise, however, I can't recommend this. If someone goes through it, trims some fat and then gives all the Galactic civilizations equal treatment, then we'll talk.

PS: Why are the Ranger starships (Peacekeepers) given a write-up twice? You get very detailed information in the AstroPol Ranger section and then a full ship writeup in the back with the rest of the ships. Things like this are what I'm talking about. The layout isn't very good on top of a heavy bias toward one group.

Savage Swords, 5e D&D version
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/31/2018 20:02:33

Pro's: By Crom! Finally! A true classic sword and sorcery overlay for 5e. There have been OSR attempts at this but they never quite hit it right for me. Yet, this is quite good. I would suggest dumping the class conversions given early in the book and solely using the Savage Swords classes given later for the real S&S feel being Human-Centric and magic has its cost. Yes!

While the non-spellcasters here are are still a little rough around the edges, the two spell-casting classes shine brightly here as you must sacrifice blood for power or take a benefit/flaw in a type of magical corruption as you advance in power.

Cons:

I so wanted to give this 5 stars but there are some glaring editing issues. The most egregious being that under the Beast Slayer bonus feats on page 25 of the document there is a list of Pathfinder feats not 5e feats.

Secondly, only the Beast Slayer and Blood Priest have alignments provided after the role section.

The Wayfarer's Knowledge ability is based on Pathfinder, not 5e. The Steel Will of the Wayfarer is not boldfaced and just runs after the Skilled section is easily missed.

There some other minor editing issues but what I have mentioned are the glaring errors.

4 for being right on the correct feel for the genre but 1 on editing.

Steel and Glory, Set 1, Mini-Game #45
by alain D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/20/2018 18:08:27

Hi, I asked for some answers about ambiguities concerning the rules: ''I don't understand how the shields are supposed to work. Did they give a +2 modifier to the attack skill of the wielder (a penalty?). Same question about the leather straps (-1 to ... what? resistance ? combat skill?) And what's the use of a second (inferior) weapon who gives a disavantage (dagger)? Some weapons have a "-" modifier and some a "+0" what is the difference? the strength seems unusefull except, maybe, for some non-combat actions (unexplained)? these rules seems so interesting, but ...''

Obviously, the author behind this "rules' doesn't care. a waste of money, and a lack of consideration for customers. (one more time: all purposes ... from the same author) Disapointing. So 2 Stars, (et encore, parce que je suis gentil). should be 4 with some answers

Bonsoir.

Edit: Now, after the author's answers, I gave it another try, and the game appear to be fun and simple (but not simplistic) .... so, my rating must be raised. Appologies

Sorry you were disappointed by us here at Avalon not contacting us for your answers, but with almost 3,000 products it is impossible for us to troll the product pages for such communication. We do not recieve any kind of notification when a post in made on the product’s page. If you have a question about any of our games, it is best to either drop us an email, or better yet, post the questions on our forum, which can be found on our web site. As for your questions.... Shields modify the final attack number required to score a hit. If the total number was say 7, and a shield was used, the the final target number would be a “9”. Thus it becomes a bit harder to score a hit and do damage. Armor on the other hand either reduces the damage taken , eh the -1 referred to, or outright stops the damage. Mods to weapons add to the damage felt with a successful attack. +0 means that while the weapon does not have a mod, it can be modified by other means. A “-“ means the weapon’s damage cannot be modified by any means, Why two weapons? well the character might drop or be forced to disarm and so they might need another weapon just in case. Strength comes in with throwing other character’s around. I hope these answer your questions and if you need to contact us do so by means of an email or on our web site. Maybe you might then like to make an update to your rating of this product.

Heroes Wear Masks, Powers!
by Jürgen R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/09/2018 06:18:18

The book have a totall of 187 pages what sound good for this price.

The problem comes as soon you look at the powers as some like Cosmic Power are put in two times in direct follow into this book, something that should never happen if anyone just glanced over the finished PDF before the release.

Then there new Templates like Cosmic that are never mentioned how they work in this book or in Hero Wear Mask it self.

Also some Power complet miss the "Power Activation Skill Check Required: Yes/No" line what make them difficult to handle for the GM.

I think for all Flight powers the maneuverability is complete missing.

But the worst part is that the autor set requirement for a power that I can't find in HWM, this book or my Pathfinder books.

Worst set of rules ever seen! The cost of wepons in missing. There are a game mechanic called "Armor", but there no cost for this value, worst the "Defense" value (with a cost and different mechanics) came from Armor! Rules confused and non-consistent. A waste of money!

Heroes Wear Masks, 5e D&D Version
by Danny H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/25/2017 09:28:28

Poorly executed, and not very well thought out at all. The guidelines for constructing heroes is so linear that it is nearly impossible to create any heroe other than the narrowly defined path. Want a street level hero with lot's of experience? Sorry won't work. Want a young and powerful hero who hasn't learned to control his awesome power? Sorry, can't do that either? This game is a direct reflection of the problem with trying to make actual roleplaying games like video games.

Guardians of Order, and Green Ronin did this idea far better, with 3.5, and the latter eventually had to abandon the D&D system altogether to make it work. Guardian's of Order made it work right off the bat. In short, don't waste your money on this if you want to play anything resembling a non-standardized superhero.
