OP4 - Leprechaun's Luck
by Dave L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/02/2018 12:16:23

A pleasant, short one-shot that took us about 2 hours. I ran this one for my daughter, a fairly new player whose PC was a 3rd level Circle of the Moon Druid at the time. There are some great opportunities for combat and/or social interaction in most areas on the map. I added an encounter with a wolf to up the difficulty slightly. Bottom line: We had great fun playing it. Nicely done, Frank!

FVS4 - Penchant for Adventure - 1
by Nine L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/16/2018 10:21:08

This was my first attempt to run a game as GM with a newbie player. It went amazingly smooth, thanks to the great setting of this adventure. I read that there is a sequel to this adventure, and in retrospect I should have read it before running this one, since I fear now that my depiction of the villagers will differ quite a lot from what is needed for the 2nd Penchant adventure and also some more background information on the monks would have been nice. But anyway, that's my bad, and this first one is a really good way to intoduce someone to D&D.

Nice adventure to start characters out. Kids F7/T1 leader with his friends Pal1, C/R, C/M, and NPCs F/M and lizardman F1 did just fine. Easy to add numbers if needed.

FC1 - Turret of the Frost Giant
by Dave L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/15/2017 12:52:15

Nice one or two session adventure (3 to 4 hours each), depending on how you want to play it. I added this setting into my homebrew 5e campaign and it worked really well. Had to convert the monsters, traps, and treasure stats to 5e, but that was not hard to do at all. A winter wolf pet for Garr made the showdown at the turret more challenging for my party of 6. I'm liking the Filbar series and will explore some others to plug and play into our campaign. Thank you to the creators!

FVS1 - Zechariah’s Dungeon
by Thomas B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/20/2017 21:54:02

NO SPOILERS REVIEW Overall, I would say that this module is certainly worth the $3, and is a valiant and successful attempt to provide a true solo, RPG experience. It is aimed for beginners, but not newbies, as there are some game mechanics that are not explained in the module, specifically how initiative works and there is a magical, treasure item that requires outside knowledge (GM's guide) to know exactly how to use it. Where it does succeed as a beginners module, it gives some choices that will teach a new player the type of actions to consider. That being said, I was slightly disappointed that there were not more of those choices. In particular, I wish the module gave the opportunity to do some perception checks or search for traps. Understandably, it would be difficult for the author to make up possiblities for every unforseen circumstance a player might wish to try. As a single player campaign, for a first level character, it still provided some tense moments. I played through the module with the level 1, human fighter (noble) from the 5e starter pack, and he was killed about halfway throught the module. Some of the monsters were a little easy for that character, but would still have given a challenge to other classes. There are some goodies to be found in the dungeon that would help other first level characters through the dungeon with a little luck and making the right choices. In addition, the module also provides a section at the end to run it with a DM. There were some minor discrepancies between the true solo adventure and the single player/DM mechanic, especially in the final room. The DM section is also one of the reasons I believe this module is more for the beginner but not completely new player. The DM notes provide a lot more description of the areas that allows a good DM to fill in a lot of the color to the story. Someone who is not used to this type of game might not be able to fill in a rich a world to allow for the suspension of disbelief, and it could come across as just rolling a bunch of dice. There were times in my session that I and the monsters were just rolling poorly, and I was ripping through encounter turns quickly. In the end, I love the concept of this type of adventure. This genre will always lack the magic of what makes D&D so great - people playing and socializing together - but it is a worthwhile and supportable attempt. Though I ranked this module as middle of the road, I see it as a work in progress; which is why I am looking forward to Frank Schmidt's sophomore outing of a true solo adventure, Heart of Darkness.

FD9 - Windmill of Tregg

Good simple outing. My son ran his human F5, dwarf C4 and human F3/T5 with a 2/2 1/2elf FM NPC and they did fine. He enjoyed the windmill part especially. Liked finding the ogres cave as well.

TS1 - Heart of Darkness
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/10/2017 13:54:38

A good solo. With 29 pages of adventure, there are a substantial number of encounters.

Good points: (i) A variety of encounters, not all combats. Careful reading of the text will give clues for avoiding some combats or hazards, or how to tip the scales in the PC's favour. (ii) Foreshadowing of the ultimate villain. (iii) Linear with branches. (iv) More than one ending, with different degrees of success possible.

Possible improvements: (i) For some entries, where "go to 22A" is written, "go to 12C" may be better. See 3A; 5A; 10A; 12D. (ii) Sometimes compass directions are used. It would be better to use these all the time, or not at all. Those drawing a map may get confused.

Recommended.

My son enjoyed this adventure. simple and to the point. His human F6, gray elf C6/T7 and NPC drow FMT 556 cleaned up things nicely. No members of the local clergy were left to save.

FVS4 - Penchant for Adventure - 1
by Ted W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/02/2016 12:03:43

Needing a solo adventure to help a new (to 5e) player and new DM (me) into the system, I "purchased" Penchant for Adventure. I'm glad I did. The level 1 warlock was holding his own up until the final encounter. I would definitely recommend this adventure to any new players. Actually 1-on-1 isn't too bad a way for a DM to get a new player familar with D&D's 5e.

FA3 - Darkwood Forest
by Alastair M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/02/2016 11:36:45

Rather like the preceding FA-series Filbar woodland product "FA2 - Springwood Forest", this is another interesting forested area, with some handy ideas and atmospheric photos most GMs would have little problem in slotting into their latest campaign. Again, there are internal hooks which could develop into further stories as well, so plenty to make use of and be inspired by.

The Tunnels map benefits from a good-quality printout especially, as it's not quite clear enough with "normal" to "ink-saving" printer settings (though the text and area map are), and the English needs a little effort to follow in places. These aren't really negatives though, so it's easy to give this Filbar area a deserved five-star rating.

FA2 - Springwood Forest
by Alastair M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/02/2016 11:24:51

This is a delightfully interesting small forest area, easily adapted into an on-going campaign by any GM in need of such, with options to expand beyond this package, notably using the two areas presented in other Filbar products, "FT - Silvantri" and "FN6 - Sunken Temple of Bulu", aside from the possibilities here. Four flavour photos help in setting the scene. Always good to have something to show the players for their imaginations to adopt and adapt.

The English is a trifle oddly-applied in places, "fauna" should be "flora" in the photo caption to p.9, and the map would benefit from an upgrade to improve its clarity a little, though these are all fairly trivial points, and don't detract enough from the whole to mark the product down at all.
