The City of Talon

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Updated for 2010!

The city of Talon is a crowded, cramped, bustling nexus of business and travelers. No struggling outpost, this; civilization has firmly taken root in this portside city.

And that's the problem. Merchants wrestle over a few extra coppers' profit, while the nobles (most of whom were merchants not long ago) vie for power. Filty urchins clog the streets of the Bullrushes while the penitent file into dusty temples, and nobles while away their time and money at secretive clubs like the Knife's Point. There are vast opportunities for profit in Talon, some legitimate and many planned in shadow.

Talon is a sandbox setting, appropriate for any fantasy-style game. It's urban but medieval/Renaissance in technology; general enough to be easily inserted into any pre-industrial setting.

With this document, you get 27 separate locations in the city, each described in detail; 34 NPCs, each with a personal motto, background, and defined personality; 10 full-color maps; 2 pages of campaign and quest ideas; and a solid understanding of Talon's history, physical location, major vices, organizations, political situation, etc. Of the 34 NPCs, the most important 14 have been completely and separately statted out for the D&D 4E, D&D 3.5, and GURPS systems. You also get stats for henchmen in the D&D 4E system appropriate for levels 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25.

This 107-page PDF contains a portrait version of the text (50 pages) for printing, and a landscape version (57 pages) for reading on a laptop.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
