GM's Maps #57: Radio Station

Map making can be time-consuming and sometimes frustrating for GMs, especially GMs with limited time to begin with. In our new 'GM's Maps' range, we will be providing a range of pre-made maps for you to use in your games.

You're listening to SBK On Air! Live across the nation. The time is now nine pm and we are going over to our network news anchor Alma Geddon for more on the recent events in Texas, Alma, over to you!”

For over 100 years radio has been a powerful and popular broadcast medium all over the world. Even in the video age radio still has a strong following and programming can range from music to talk radio and audio drama. Whatever you want to hear, there is probably a station for you.

Then there are the number of stations. Mysterious stations that seem to broadcast nonsense and may have links to espionage or, if the conspiracy theorist is to be believed, may serve an even darker purpose.

This map depicts a radio station with three floors and a basement and includes a key, some information about radio programming and several adventure hooks.

Examples:

Apocalyptic Panic

The end of the world has come and the radio station's staff are trying to get news of the events, safe zones, rescue attempts and so on out to survivors all the while trying to survive themselves as the station is located inside one of the danger areas.

Radio Afterlife

A lightning strike allows the station's broadcasting equipment to send and receive messages to heaven and hell. The call-in show goes crazy and hordes of people descend on the station to contact loved ones. The faithful of all faiths head towards it too, with 'the passion' in them or anger at blasphemy. PCs are staff trying to keep order and make some sense of what is happening - they too are of a variety of backgrounds, and everyone has lost somebody

(Concept by Daniel Dunlavey)

Weather Forecast
Some powerful entity from beyond our world is using the weather against humanity (Acid rain that dissolves people, gale force winds that blow people to pieces, lightning strikes that turn into clawed hands and snatch people off the ground and into the storm, etc).

Survivors in a certain area hide out in the local radio station - it’s on a hill, out of reach and the only safe place. The station is trying to broadcast to survivors and find out how widespread the paranormal activity is, broadcasting to the world and reporting on what’s happening.
Eventually, they start receiving calls that are just static or are weird messages (an unknown language, shrill voices and human screaming, ominous and threatening).

With each weather change, the paranormal things come further into our world and become stronger... paranoia and extreme fear and hallucinations amongst all survivors.

(Concept by Alice Rose Beauvoisin)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
