The Colossus, A New Base Class

Welcome to issue #156 of the Player Paraphernalia series. This issue introduces the creation of the Colossus base class, the creation of Aaron Hollingsworth along with an Irish/Gaelic spin by John Buckley. The Colossus represents strength incarnate, relying on brute strength and resolve to overcome any problem. Based on the tropes of Dr. Jekyl/Mr Hyde and my favorite Irish Ulster hero Cú Chulainn, the colossus simply powers his way through obstacles as if they weren't there.

This is a great little product, however, there are a few things that strike me as odd and deny this little gem being a 5 star product. For instance, the mighty ability grants an enhancement bonus to damage and attacks rolls. I can understand this choice, however, this is an extremely uncommon bonus type unless it's used in conjunction with a weapon (such as soulknife's soulblade ability), it also precludes the character from enjoying the standard bonuses granted by magic items. I would think it makes more sense for this to be a morale or competence bonus. I also noticed a slight hiccup in regards to the strength focus ability the feature doesn't describe in what capacity the unarmed strike is when using this ability (i.e. when using strength focus are the colossus's unarmed strikes considered weapons and if so how could such a character add weapon properties?). Another oddity I encountered is the fact that at 10th level the mighty ability allows the colossus to bypass damage reduction magic ... at 10th level?...See more

Author's Addendum: I would like to share what inspired me to develop the Colossus base class. Pathfinder already provides numerous options to play a hulking strong guy that can smash enemies with their bare hands. I saw three things lacking, however. The first was simplicity of mechanics. With the colossus there is less bookkeeping and simpler math. The second thing is variety of theme. The colossus can be customized to function as nearly any kind of strong hero, with fewer restrictions on the nature of the class powers. Lastly, I wanted to portray supernatural strength in fun, new ways. Many of the colossus talents grant spell-like abilities that are Strength-based. The Mighty and Strength Focus class features grant the character the combat capability to defeat enemies with all the appropriate bonuses to get the job done. It is my hope that players enjoy this class as much as I enjoyed creating it!

You know, with a little tweaking this could make a great 'Corruption' for use with "Horror Adventures" (such as coming up with 'stains' for the Talents presented).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
