Lion & Dragon

Lion & Dragon is a Medieval Authentic OSR game. Until now, you only thought you were playing "medieval fantasy"!

With Lion & Dragon, the rules of the original tabletop RPG have been adapted to create a more historically authentic medieval experience, to reflect the grittier and yet more mythic world of a magical medieval Europe.

L&D includes new rules governing social class and materials on culture to help a GM craft a world that feels closer to the world of the 100-years war or the War of the Roses. It has a grittier and more dangerous feel to reflect the cheapness of life at the time. Also included are sections on medieval economics, law & justice, and chapters with monsters and magical items based on authentic medieval legends. Finally, a completely revamped magic system is based on actual grimoire-magic as the medieval magicians really envisioned it.

From the creator of Dark Albion, Lion & Dragon will have you discovering real medieval fantasy for the very first time.

(Publisher’s note : Lion & Dragon is a complete OSR game in itself. However, even if you prefer to stick with traditional fantasy RPGs featuring dwarves, elves, spellcasters, and the like, L&D can still provide a lot of options that will help you give much flavor to a more usual campain world. For example, the sections on alchemy, herbal medicines, poisons, or law & justice, could be imported in any other fantasy game.)

I have gotten notices that the pdf has been updated several times lately. Have there really been updates or is this a problem with the DTRpg app?

It can be used for a medieval game with historical details. Not only for Dark Albion.

I started playing RPGs with AD&D back in '94... This is the game I wished AD&D was when I started playing. It took me decades to find a book that has everything I wanted in a medieval/fantasy game. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in a game with the "feeling" of series like Game of Thrones (books or season 1-5) and The Last Kingdom, or movies like Dragonslayer, Ironclad, The King, Dragonheart, Season of the Witch and Black Plague.

How’s the POD quality comparing the hardcover to the softcover?

Absolutely terrific! I was rather skeptical buying a book which I had no real intention of using besides as a reference to mine for ideas. Couldn't be more impressed with both the scholarly level of research and knowledge into what a genuine medieval experience would be like, and the realities that come along with living in a world like that.

The monotheistic choice seemed awful to me, but I'm fully convinced now at how much more intriguing the aspect of religious conflict, magic and quests become in a world where players are petitioning the same god for favour or fighting in their name.

Grimoire magic section is where this really shines. Fascinating take on sorcery that I will use as often as possible.

All in all, couldn't be happier. What a great buy and great value. Worth paying twice the price for this even if I never run a game. Anyone who wants to run a medieval setting should pick this up!

Albion is the setting. This is the rules that go with the setting.

This is a complete rulebook with completely rewritten rules for magic and clerical miracles. If you have Dark Albion, check Appendix P... This book greatly expands the rules on Appendix P. There are six classes, magic, equipment, a huge section to create characters (background events, names, etc.) It has everything you need to play. Combining it with Dark Albion gives you the full experience. But if you don't like the rules on Appendix P, skip it. I've tried and loved it :-)

It's worth it for the medieval lore & law background alone.

When the artists are credited, it increases rhe number of listings for the book on OBS, and allows dabs of an artist to find your book. There had been a proper attribution previously.

I updated the page with the artists' names. Denis Mc Carthy comes first because I really do like his art! (next products are going to feature much more of it)

RPGPundit, the author, is writing (though with a different publishers), a lot of small supplements (5.5 x 8.5 format), many of which are for Lion & Dragon. They are called "RPGPundit Presents" and are available here on OBS.

Is this material repeated from the various character creation sections of the Dark Albion setting book, or is there new material here? If so, what percentage of it is new (not repeated from DA)? Thanks...

According to the author: 80% is new material. I will add that when L&D material is very similar to D.A. material (similar but not identical, because what has been repeated, such as the demon summoning rules and character classes, has been adapted to the new magic system), layout is however new. No page from D.A. has been reprinted as is in Lion & Dragon.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
