English Eerie: Rural Horror Storytelling Game for One Player

Suggested Price $4.00

English Eerie is a storytelling game about horror in rural England. The game takes inspiration from folklore, along with the works of M.R. James, Arthur Machen and Algernon Blackwood to help players tell their own haunted tales of the English countryside.

Ghost and horse

The game is designed to be played over one or a series of dark evenings by the flicker of candlelight. The player, you, will need a journal, a pen, a ten-sided die (d10), a set of tokens in two colours (beads etc) and a deck of playing cards.

The aim of English Eerie is to tell your own tale of rural horror through entries in your journal - just as many protagonists do in horror literature. The card deck will be the engine that drives your story, presenting scenes for you to flesh out and for your character to overcome - all of which is recorded in physical journal entries. As time goes on tension rises and the horror is ramped up until the climactic end scene. There are several scenarios at the end of this book that offer you an inspirational framework to build a terrifying tale. You can choose to play the game in a single sitting or to draw out the experience over a series of nights.

This book contains five spine-chilling scenarios to inspire your tales of terror:

  • The Beast on the Moor
  • The Lost River
  • Detox
  • A Rattle of Chains
  • The Inn
For those who want a group game, the Campfire rules offer suggestions for playing English Eerie with friends.

What the point to make a character with more Resolve then Spirit points? The Resolve points just add +1 to the roll, which looks as very weak substitution to Spirit point.

Hey, just want to say that the image file for the cover on drivethrurpg is corrupted and should be replaced. It won't load beyond halfway for me.

Bought it, sight unseen, on premise alone. As someone who was once stationed in rural England, I often found myself alone in the wilds, with no other company than my stout English walking stick, my cozy long scarf, and a pocketful of cold iron nails. No street lights. Not another soul to be seen. Why, then, were other footfalls constantly audible when I would stop and listen? Whose voices, soft and somehow all around me, did I hear? How closely the fog would cling to one's heart on those delightfully dreadful outings! I'm lookin' forward to diving into English Eerie...

Quick question to the card setup: 4,5,6,7 times 4 plus 3 Queens can't be divided into three even piles, I assume this isn't an issue?

From the desk of N. Stevens, Esq.

Dear Sir or Madam, as the case may be:

I am pleased to say that this appears to be a handful of coin very well spent. I have a packed pipe of Lord Turnbull's Blend, a pint of bitter next to me on the side table, and a deck of antique (possibly haunted) playing cards at the ready. Although I have secured the latches on all the shutters, barred the door, and sent away the help for the evening (well, to the oubliette, at least) - still - the house is unquiet and the scratching at the panes must merely be a bit of bad Stilton. A third of the way through the rules-book, I felt uneasy for reasons I could not explain. 2/3 of the way, I think my pluck gave out, and I could not finish owing to a foreboding that I could not account for, nor hand-wave away. I gazed upon the cameo of my poor lost wife and children, and my various trophies from India and the lands of the Toltecs, and I knew that all my accomplishments were as nothing...See more

Hello!

Reading through the rules, I was wondering about having different events for the three Grey Ladies depending on their suit (and when they were drawn). I could imagine that it would be even more inspirational, as the lines of the original story get blurred more strongly that way (so, a story template would have 12 entries for the Ladies instead of 3).

Looks very promising, I will try to give it a go.

BTW, in the example, there is a typo with "prayed on my mind" instead of "preyed on my mind" at the end of the morning of the second, before the Grey Lady is reached.

Yours,
Deathworks

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
