100 Irrelevant Notes and Letters to Bamboozle Players

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Players will often come across various notes and letters that are important and useful to whatever quest they are pursuing. However, if only important notes are detailed, it becomes pretty clear which ones are relevant.

Here, then, are 100 different notes, letters, demands, lists, reports, threats, evidence of conspiracies or the ravings of madmen that all look like they might be important, but have no actual meaning - unless, of course, the GameMaster decides otherwise. These can be used to answer the question, "What do we find?" with some misleading answers. Alternatively, they could be used as a source of adventure hooks or ideas.

There are two tables. The main one is the list of actual notes and there is a supplementary one that gives 12 different conditions for the notes to be found in (a thirteenth is naturally neither damaged nor unusual).

Most of the notes are suitable for any setting, including modern and futuristic. Some may need tweaking to remove references to magic or supernatural creatures. Names and places can be added or changed to be more relevant to a setting or adventure.

I had to do it didn’t I? I thought my skills would easily be sufficient for the task - the prize was so great after all. A treasure of vast worth, one which would enable me to retire to a life of permanent luxury. How mistaken I was. Even now I can feel the foul magics I accidentally invoked coursing through my body, gradually destroying it. I do not have much time left now. Do not go after the treasure yourself; you will only come to regret it, as I have, for what little will remain of your life afterwards.

" I'm curious, do you have any examples of 'compelling situations for them to come across where they have to make choices'?"

The medium is tabletops is about making choices. The experience of both running and playing them goes like this:
GM: What do you want to do?
Player: I want to do X.
GM: When you try to do this, that happens. What do you want to do?

With experienced players almost everything where there's no reason for the GM to ask the player "what do you want to do" gets skipped in a quick transition, a sentence or two from the GM about what's happening. Therefore what both players and GMs want are situations that enable players being active. No-one comes to a tabletop to listen to a story. Everyone is there to tell the story together in an active manner. A compelling situation is one that they can run across where they either need to or could choose to weigh in on it and make a choice, with emphasis on making that choice. For a tabletop player...See more

Interesting. I have a supplement in the very, very early stages (just pen & paper notes currently) that might have some relevance to it. It's another 'bamboozling' supplement; this time NPCs who look suspicious but might be perfectly normal. Not quite encounters at the level you mentioned, but how players react to the NPCs could alter things.

Interesting that you mentioned Skyrim as well. This supplement was inspired to a large degree by the sheer amount of written material in the various Elder Scrolls games. I love that, and any character I play tends to wind up with huge piles of books in their houses. I would like to create 'books' as well as short notes too.

I have been looking at the World Interactions in Skyrim (which are generally better than Oblivion's; those tended to be violent encounters with wandering monsters) thinking that something like that would be interesting and would add depth. I'll take a closer look at that idea, thanks!

Definitely would buy such supplements, and would recommend to anyone who cares about my opinion, which granted is not many people. Would love NPCs acting suspiciously, those could make the players ask for questions and get people interested. Then you can slam them with the plot once they're looking into this suspicious NPC.

Thanks for the input - I'll have to brainstorm more ideas for suspicious NPCs, as I only have a few!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
