The Legacy Weapon

A Dungeon World Artifact and One-on-One Play One-Shot Adventure

No one knows where the Legacy Weapon came from. Some speak of a cabal of powerful wizards, others say it was a relic from a past age, the holy say the gods sent it from the heavens, and the superstitious think that it rose from the depths of the hells. Regardless of its mysterious origins, the weapon is now in our world, waiting to find a worthy champion to bestow its gifts upon.

Designed for One on One play, The Legacy Weapon is a companion Playbook for Dungeon World. The GM provides the player the Legacy Weapon playbook, works with the player to create the weapon, and then plays out their adventure with the artifact in their hands. The Legacy Weapon is designed to supplement the moves of a single character, allowing them to have heroic adventures of their own.

Inspired by Jason from the Discern Realities Podcast and the skill sharing from Mark Richardson's Headspace, the Legacy weapon is a great way to create a night of fun with a single player or a campaign about the string of wielders who encounter this power weapon.

Mentions

"I was moving through the areas, it felt like a dungeon crawl, but it was just me, it wasn’t like there was a whole party, and I felt like I had the necessary tools to do the dungeon crawl, but I was also kind of getting this other story about the weapon which was fun…”

— Jason Cordova, Discern Realities, Episode 41

"The Living Weapon is a fascinating approach to running Dungeon World with two players. It's a tool that I can see driving one-on-one play both mechanically and thematically. Very cool."

-- Jeff Stromer, Party of One Podcast

Hey! I really love this :D Did you have any suggestions about how a player earns and loses *respect* from the weapon?

So the weapon respects certain stats, and so it gains and loses respect based on displays along those stats. So a weapon that respects Might (Strength) will gain respect for its wielder when they perform feats of strength. One that likes Charm, will be wooed when that character does something charming in its presence or tries to interact with it in a charming way.

Does that help?

I'm really interested to know if this might work in something *other* than a one-to-one session. The idea intrigues me, and centring a series of adventures on a single weapon sounds really cool... but can it be set up for a party of adventurers?

You can use it in a party set up, but you just need to be aware that whoever has the weapon may have access to more moves and could seem more powerful. There are some notes about that in the instructions for the weapon.

One thing you could do is have the entire party bonded to the weapon so that any of them could take the weapon and use it, and allow the party to share it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
