With Sword and Shield

ADD TO WISHLIST >

With Sword and Shield is a miniatures game of mass combat, set in any world you wish to imagine! Field armies composed of unruly hordes, stalwart men-at-arms, thundering cavalry, fantastic creatures, gigantic constructs, great war engines, powerful wizards, iconic heroes and brave leaders in an attempt to crush your opponents on the field of battle.

The game uses simple differential mechanics to determine combat outcomes, and pass/fail/critical failure gradients for casting spells. Casualties are removed in ranks, or individual bases for characters, and units that fails to recover from Command Hits may rout from play.

With Sword and Shield supports miniature scales from 3mm up to ‘heroic’ 28mm, and includes:

  • Rules reflecting troop order, formations, and maneuvers
  • Provisions for horde, skirmish, elite, large and enormous creatures, flying, constructs and war engine unit types
  • Characters in the form of Leaders, Heroes, Mages, Wild Mages, Necromancers and Ecclesiasts
  • Dozens of unit and character attributes that create a unique feel and purpose for each unit in play
  • 87 Spells and Rituals with which to harass and destroy your enemies
  • Six standard scenarios, scalable to the size of game you wish to play
  • An average game length of 2-3 hours.
  • Complete rules and guidelines for creating your own units and armies
  • Six complete army lists to get you started playing right away – Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Orcs, Beastmen and Undead – plus unit profiles for summoned creatures and elementals
  • Game reference charts, markers, and blank unit cards for your own creations

For those of us who have based their cavalry lengthwise for another mass combat fantasy game, are there any guidelines on how to incorporate them without re-basing a whole mess of horses? That in, my cavalry faces the short end of the base. How do I count formations? Or am I out of luck?

You could count 1-2 ranks of models as base ranks for game-play, using an extra marker/die to show the unit's rank losses. While you may, at times need to come up with some in-game rulings for the unit's flanks/rear as a result of losses to such a unit, it's better than fielding them sideways. :)

I based my 25mm units on square 80mm X 80mm bases for Fantasy Rules!, years ago. Would these rules work with that basing?

Generally speaking, yes. You would want to define the number of ranks represented by each of your bases for the different troops in your army, and would need to track rank casualties, but I don't see that your basing scheme would require more than minor modifications to the existing rules.

Is this the same system as any of your other products?

There are some minor similarities to Planetary Operations (the use of Command Hits to track morale status), but this game is mechanically different than our other games. Units are rated with Skill and Will die types (used for combat and morale respectively, plus a few other functions) that can be modified by additive/subtractive modifiers or up/down die types. Characters can play a large role in the game, and combat is very straightforward (Command Hits, Wounds, or both from a single attack).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
