Playing a game, but don't have dice handy?

Pocket Dice Roller is an analogue, wallet-size (pocketmod) booklet that emulates d6, d10, d12, and d20 rolls.

This is not a random number generator, but an "unexpected" number generator; statistically, this does not match the randomness of an actual die roll, but it's a good replacement when you have no dice or when dice would be inconvenient.

I keep a Nickle in my wallet with the pocket dice roller. When I need a d20 roll, I "roll" the d10 and I flip the coin. On a heads I add 10 to the d10 result (and count the '0' as a '10'). Same principal for d12s.

I scaled the "letter" down to 80% before printing, and was able to get it to fit inside my wallet.

Instructions say to roll 2d10 for a d20, this is not going to give [the flat probability distribution that rolling a d20 will give][1], instead [the probability distribution will be heavily biased towards the middle numbers][2]. The same way that [rolling 2d6 results][3] in a 7 1/6th of the time and a 12 1/36th of the time.

Yes, you're correct. Possibly a new, dedicated d20 version will be released later/soon.

There's another issue in general; there are 8 pages, so even the d6 rolls are not correctly distributed.

For this reason, I prefer to call this booklet an "unexpected number generator" rather than a "random" number generator, because it's not truly random.

Still, using this booklet for Lone Wolf and Tunnels and Trolls solo adventures has worked out well, especially since both the (pre-written) GM and the player are both biased the same way.

I'll look into publishing a d20 version soon. It'll have a free download option, as well, so if you already paid for the current version, you can just grab the d20 version for free.

Thanks for the feedback!

No problem. Thinking about this got me really into outcome probabilities of different types of dice rolls. There's [a great site for examining outcomes][1] - I was impressed that people have come up with ways to shape S curves, bathtub curves, pretty much anything.

Somebody *wink wink* could write up a primer on how to generate common curves and how to nudge them towards different shapes.

A better way to roll 1d20 would be to roll both a d6 and a d10 - if the d6 roll comes up even, then add 10 to the d10 roll. This will give you 1-20 with an even distribution.

I keep a coin with my pocket dice roller. When I need a d12/d20 roll, I flip the coin and if I get heads I add 6/10 to the result.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
