Fifth Edition Funnel

You didn't ask for this.

You chose your boring profession because you wanted a quiet life. Adventuring is best left to those to those with heroic chins and cast-iron stomachs, not you. Why go out and face the unknown when you can curl up next to the fire with a good book and some sleepy-berry tea?

Sip.

>Knock knock<

Trouble at the door. Something in town is dangerously wrong, and there is no one to bail you out. The grave quest falls to you and your friends. You are under-equipped, under-prepared, and in all likelihood, you are not coming back. There is a second of hesitation but then you grab your gear and head out the door.

Adventurers are made, not born.

===

Ever wanted to face the cold, dark, and dangerous unknown without the advantages of a fantasy hero? This is your chance!

Fifth Edition Funnel puts a spin on character creation. In the Funnel, each participating player quickly generates several 0-level characters blessed with the abilities and low survivability of your average commoner. Those that survive will be promoted to 1st-level heroines and heroes.

The Funnel bonds characters over common challenges they meet and (hopefully) overcome. The surviving 1st-level characters share a common origin as adventurers. Instead of merely rolling dice, there is a trial by fire where average people succeed against the odds to do something heroic (or hide under a table in a tavern).

Recently picked this up. Haven't used it yet, but it looks very well done and like great fun. LOVE the art, btw.

Took the liberty of redesigning the character sheet so it fits four characters on one page. Would like to send you a copy.

Question -> How would you handle a digital map with 20 or so characters exploring the dungeon? Would you still recommend this to new players?

I don't use a lot of digital resources, so I can't really answer that question. However, when I run a funnel, I generally use theater of the mind style play. However, when using maps and a grid it can get tricky for a bigger group. I often let players run their multiple characters on the same initiative count, so it speeds up play.

Would I recommend this to brand new players? That is a soft no. I wouldn't run this for players that have no concept of what an RPG is. Funnels take some of the basic rules and then twist them, which could be frustrating for new players. If your players have played RPGs before, and have a basic understanding of the concepts (e.g. character creation, what a hit point is, etc) then it could work. Be sure to explicitly explain the concept of the funnel and what will happen to most of their characters... it's about survival, not heroics.

Question — if you're leveling a Level 0 to a Level 1, what is the approach for determining Level 1 Hit Points? Since the Level 0 HP calculation is 4 + Con Modifier, and the Level 1 calculation is Max Hit Die + Con Mod, would you simply calculate HP like you would at a standard leveling? Would using the Level 1 calculation as is add TOO much HP? Loving the funnel, btw.

I am glad you are have fun with the funnel!

This is a really good question as I don't think it is stated in the Funnel. The intent I had while writing this is your newly minted level 1 hero would get the hit points of their new class at level one (Max HD+Con Mod), effectively replacing whatever they had at level 0.

In my mind: they've gone from being a nobody, to somebody.

That being said, if I were DMing a game, and the players *really* wanted to do a standard leveling I would probably roll with it as I think the impact would be minimal. It would tend to mostly benefit characters with smaller hit dice and depending on the con mod, it could disadvantage barbarians a hit point.

Just a heads up, the racial bonus table has Tiefling ability score bonuses swapped compared to the PHB (+2 Int, +1 Cha, while PHB has +1 Int, +2 Cha). Not sure if that's a typo.

Noticed there was an update made in January. It says minor edits...can you be more specific about what was updated?

First, thanks for purchasing the product. It means a lot to us. You rock.

The update was really minor, just clarification of some language under "9. Bonds" on page nine. Some very nice people on the internet pointed it out and I felt it warranted an update to remove ambiguous language.
It used to read: "Once the players agree on a pair, each player should roll a d6. The result indicates the ability score that is increased by one according to the table below."

It now reads: "Once the players agree on a pair, each player should roll a d6 and consult the table below. The resulting ability score is increased by one point."

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
