5e Creature Decks: Aberrations, Fiends, & More

Selected Option:

Creature statistic cards for all the core Aberration, Celestial, Elemental, Fey, and Fiend 'System Reference' creatures of the 5th edition of the world's most popular Fantasy RPG. Each card has full color art on the front and the creature's complete game stats on the back. This is one deck of a collection of 5e Creature Decks.

Here is a quick comparison between these cards (and the sister-decks) vs. the official cards released in late 2018:

  • We include the PDFs (they don't); but their cardstock is better.
  • They have some creatures we don't (not in the System Reference Document (SRD)--but they skip adult & ancient dragons, beholders, all beasts, anything over CR16, and some others); we do have all the core dragons and everything in the SRD plus some more converted by us from prior editions, plus more licensed from Kobold Press's Tome of Beasts.
  • Our cost is comparable and we don't print in China. The PDFs make ours much cheaper, even when printed.

The cards are a deck of 58 cards (56 creature cards, one cover/checklist card and one license card).

The document is a PDF of cards set up to be printed at 2.75"x3.75" and trimmed to 2.5"x3.5". Also included is a second PDF with all the cards on 8.5"x11" pages, 4 cards per page.

The text on the cards is generally a 9pt font, but some cards have 7pt to 8pt font if the text wouldn't otherwise fit on the card even after shortening the text.  (All meaning/game information was preserved.)

PURCHASER
Does anyone else have a problem getting these to print properly? I don't know if it's the printer I'm using or the settings are weird, but for some reason when I try to print the pages don't line up. For reference, the printer doesn't print double-sided- I have to take out the stack and re-insert it.

Just curious why there are no Mind Flayers, Beholders, or Umber hulks in any of the decks. Is there a reason for this?

PUBLISHER
There is a reason: These are the official 5E creatures of these types (Aberrations, fiends, etc.) The "System Reference Document" (SRD) doesn't include those. The SRD is the set of rules and creature statistics Wizards of the Coast has made available for others to use, as long as the license is followed.

We do have 3 more decks of creatures which are converted from prior editions of the game. But even those don't include the monsters you mention. (But they do have other favorites.) Those specific monsters were called out in the original SRD as not allowed to be re-published without getting a separate license. I've seen some other publishers get close to those (mechanical floating eyes for example), but there isn't a clear line on what is allowed and what isn't.

Have you considered reaching out to WOTC and looking to license the full Monster Manual, Volos Guide, and Mordenkainen's Tome monsters? I'd happily pay an additional fee to get this product with ALL of the monsters included. Seems to me they license game content out to Gale Force 9 and would be open to such an arrangement.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
