Risus: Toast of the Town - A Free Pulp-Fantasy Adventure

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The town looks peaceful enough, but there’s a pillar of smoke from last night’s fire, burned corpses from the wreckage, and a demon strung up against the church in the market square. Dolemon Drake, a local hero, gives the call to all brave souls to join him in eradicating the devilish creatures infesting the sewers. Will our heroes join in Drake’s noble fight?

Toast of the Town is a free adventure module for Risus: The Anything RPG with a groovy map (Trostig town), a warm stack of ready-to-play characters, a GM cheat-sheet, and more swashbuckling heroic adventure than most things you'll eat today. This adventure takes place in Uresia: Grave of Heaven along the shore of a remote mountain lake, but it's designed to slot painlessly into the fantasy world of your choice (or just pillage the setting material for your own fantasy city or town)!

A two-sided player handout from Toast of the Town.

Yes, Dyskami has purchased the setting. I believe they plan on publishing a new edition next year, but I'm not 100% sure (I've not been asked to take part in any way).

Was that town map made with the Watabou app?

My Uresia maps (including this one and other "town-scale" plans found in Slimes in Blossom Grove, Shadow River Cartographic Portrait, and Lore & Curiosities) are mostly mouse-drawn using Adobe Illustrator, then tinted and textured in Adobe Photoshop. I also incorporate scans of hand-drawn elements, including coastlines and some structures. I use photographs of things like rocks and pizza to create additional texture patterns, along with scans of pencil lines and watercolor splats. I've done a couple of technique/tutorial articles on my blog (Rolltop Indigo) and construction images on my DeviantArt page (Temphis, in the Uresia and Scraps galleries). For a specific "behind-the-scenes" graphic of the Trostig plan from this module, search for "Trostig Town Plan: Meat and Bones." I also post (far too many) maps-in-progress and tutorial images on Twitter =)

Interesting. The layout looks a *lot* like something generated by the Watabou city generator, just prettied up. Nice to see diverse methods producing similar results.

The last page of this adventure says "This adventure is part of the Saint August fantasy module series, which is in turn part of the Risus Kickstarter Adventure Set." Any idea where I can find these other adventures?

This is easily one of the best adventures I have read or run, and I have been gaming since 1978. I can not wait until further adventures are released (no, really, at my age, I can’t wait too long!).

I feel the exact same way, even if I have only played since 1981.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
