GOLD AWARD: Best Writing

SILVER AWARD: PRODUCT OF THE YEAR
SILVER AWARD: Best Adventure

A terrible Red King wars with an awful Queen, and together they battle into being a rigid, wrong world... and this book has everything you need to run it. (And any other place in your first, second, third, fourth or fifth edition game that might require intrigue, hidden gardens, inside-out-rooms, scheming monarchs, puzzles or beasts, liquid floors, labyrinths, growing, shrinking, duelling, broken time, Mome Raths, blasphemy, croquet, explanations for where players who missed sessions were, or the rotting arcades and parlors of a palace that was once the size of a nation.)

Zak Sabbath, game master on I Hit It With My Axe and author of the multiaward-winning Vornheim: The Complete City Kit now brings the same do-it-yourself tables-and-toolkits approach and eerie magic to an entire distorted continent.

“It’s inadequate to call A Red & Pleasant Land brilliant. With alchemist swagger, Zak takes the base matter of well-worn fantasy standards and our cheerful nerd hobbies, and makes the strangest gold.”
— China Miéville

“God this is beautiful, I love this.”
— Molly Crabapple

“It should be next to impossible to do anything original with Dracula or Alice, but Zak Sabbath demonstrates instead that it’s next to impossible for him to put out a bad game book. He trails his barbed artistic and gaming sensibilities through these two modern myths and emerges with something more than a mashup or a collage: it’s a necromantic restoration of a nightmare that never was.”
— Kenneth Hite, designer of Qelong and Night’s Black Agents

“Zak is not just imaginative, he’s bold. Which means that while he recognizes the value of fantasy traditions, he doesn’t hesitate for a moment to throw out anything that’s become tired or dull.”
— Monte Cook, author of Numenera

Such a great adventure & campaign setting! Zak writes the best adventure campaigns that are obviously played before being made into a book.

Hey, I just wanted to ask if Zak S actually receives any of the money from a purchase of the pdf?

Why isn't this available for print anywhere? Physical copies have ridicoulous prices...

It's produced and published by "Lamentations of the Flame Princess", printed and bound in Finland if I'm not mistaken. Almost EVERYTHING created by them has a limited run, for some reason, ranging from 1,000-2,000 copies for first ed. prints. Most of Zak Smith's stuff that's out of print is outrageously high. I don't know if you've looked, but "The Maze of the Blue Medusa" is going for $400. I've been playing Rpg's since '78, and I fell in love with "Lamentations." It's the closest thing to the first ed. D&D boxed set I had as a kid, but totally raw, and definitely not for kids. The Core book, 'Rules and Magic' pretty much sums up the game. You really can't beat it for around $17. I highly recommend it.
Hope this helped!

Hello Guys,

I heard good things about this DnD setting.

Right now, I am building a setting for Zweihander. Do you think A red and pleasant land would be easy to adapt or is it a waste of money?

I recommend it. There shouldn´t be any problem to adapt. Currently I am working on it to adapt this to yoon-suin. You may need to change some stats, but its easy to adapt. I play both, red and pleasant land + yoon-suin with the Maze Rats rules

Thank you!

I guess there is no easy adaptation for DnD rules system into D100 system isn't it?

I mean like take a value and multiple it by an certain amount.

If not that's mean I need to read 2 system.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
