Liber Arcanum

The Book of Secrets, a treasure trove of new spells and patrons for Wizards and Elves. This compendium of lost arcane lore is compatible with Dungeon Crawl Classics and is intended as an aid for the busy Storyteller.

Inside you will find: several new banes and powers for magic weapons, 40 pre-generated magic weapons, 6 new patrons, 46 new spells, and a plethora of new ideas to inspire and terrify your players.  You will find options to tweak and customize the nature of magic and how it works in your gaming environment as well as new item creation spells, the rules for spells of greater than fifth level...and much, much more.

All just waiting for your players to stumble upon the moldering remains of the Book of Secrets.

Why does the standard color book cost more than the B&W version? Is it an error?

(I bought this in softcover from Goodman Games).

It shows a lot of effort and interest, but the tone is kind of off. There are a number of spells with somewhat dull effects, and a lot of "Magic Weapon +1" etc.

In many ways it smells more like 1980s Basic D&D than Dungeon Crawl Classics. I don't really intend to use much of it in my campaign.

I recently purchased the PDF, but when I open it from my home PC, I'm getting 302 blank pages with the title showing "E ,& ™©˘ñ Ó³Ú›RYE©}=Ð è+Ð0 nkÌ". Any idea how to fix this?

Who did the art on page 38 and does it have a name?

I'm not sure why this book needs to be 300+ Mb... the main DCC book is 480 pages, chock full of art and only 110 Mb.
Hopefully there'll be an update to something a bit more lean and mean.

Thanks for the feedback. We'll look into file compression for the future.

Hi there.

Depending on the desktop publishing application you use, it might simply be the DPI setting for exporting images. DPI as low as 75dpi for on-screen viewing are not uncommon, and images tend to dominate the size of a PDF. If you use the same PDF for print and screen that would usually be the cause, as print versions demand 300dpi and therefore increase the file size accordingly.

Shouldn't this be listed under the Dungeon Crawl Classics Rule System, not Storyteller/Storytelling?
I often look up stuff only by rule system on this site (especially for completing my DCC collection) and would have missed this if not seen it talked about on the forums at the Goodman Games site.
I'm sure others shop that way as well, you may wish to change the Rule System to increase awareness of this title.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
