Wonder Core Rules

Ever wonder what would happen if elves fought orcs, space rangers battled terror beetles, or giant robots defended the world from space aliens? So have we and that is what this game was designed to enable.

Wonder is a game system developed to play quick wargame battles between two or more players - to enable the concept of "I wonder who would win if X fought Y." The game is fine tuned and designed for quick strategic battles. For example, all the action takes place on a simplified battlemap that uses hexagon Zones where the action will occur instead of exact distances. Most units only have one stat (Quality) and some Powers to make them unique. Quality is ranked by the five basic die types: D4 to D12 to provide a relative scale from average to epic. An average D4 unit may actually beat an epic D12 if the dice roll just right. Finally, actions only require one roll and sometimes the difference matters (in Combat) while sometimes the number of successes matter (Movement and Spells).

So, throw out your rulers, grab your pen, a handful of funny shaped dice, and start a game.

This is a Pay What You Want title because we hope is that people will enjoy them as we have. The rules text is also licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. We hope that with more people playing the rules will evolve, improve, and we'll get to see the amazing stuff that you create. Creativity is free and Wonder will be too - we promise it will remain Pay What You Want and CC-BY-SA.

Why Wonder? Because it is about re-capturing the wonder of youth when we all played pretend. And we wonder what you will create.

This is not one document but actually five:

  • Wonder: Core Rules. The basic rules for play and how to build units.
  • Wonder: Core Powers. Contains a basic list of Powers to help make unique units.
  • Wonder: Play Example. Contains a quick example of play to help see the rules in action.
  • Wonder: Map Templates. Provides templates for you to print to make your own battlemaps.
  • Wonder: Fantasy Armies. Provides army lists built using these rules.

Disclaimer: I am a friend of the publisher - I have gamed with them before and helped playtest the rules. Also, I actually read the document before release to help edit it. Wonder is a no bells and whistles pdf - no art, and no graphics except [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
