Adventure 4: Into the Unknown

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Into the Unknown casts the players as Exploratory Scouts on board the IISS Spartan Wainwright, a Donosev-class Survey Scout. Their mission is to conduct a Class IVb survey of system N-83-Aleph and confirm an overview of the system obtained from pre-jump assessment phases conducted earlier and survey in detail any potentially inhabitable planets.

While there, they will uncover the descendants of a long-lost crew, survive the flora and fauna of a new world, and contend with a system-wide tragedy...

Adventure 4: Into the Unknown is a complete self-contained adventure that can be expanded into a complete mini-campaign that will challenge players to explore and solve problems with more than just a laser.

I bought the book from Mongoose awhile back. Is there a better world map out there? Its color scheme leaves much to be desired.

Hi there,
Thanks for the interest. Hope you're enjoying ItU! The map was produced by Mongoose and is better quality than anything I could produce for them, but I can see what you mean about the colours. If it's any help, you're very welcome to my originals - world map, tectonic map and local area maps - although they're not high resolution. The world map prints ok at A4 size and has worked well enough for the times I've run it.

I like the The Three Blind Mice adventure he did. So I'll get this adventure if it is in paperback.

Thank you! That's made my morning. (Glad you liked TBM) Mongoose's webpage says ItU is scheduled for print in August but I also understand that may not be certain because 80 pages may be too short. I'm guessing (this is a first for me) it will depend how sales go.

Is this designed for Classic Traveller? (I only have and play the original little black book version...)

I'm also curious where the system is in/outside of the Imperium...

It's written for Mongoose Traveller although to be honest it's pretty rules lite so 'conversion' should be no problem. And in fact the system data was generated using World Builders' Handbook (which is not far from Book 6:Scouts).

The world itself is not really set anywhere save at the edge of an unspecified Imperium. It would be easy enough however to transplant to any world which had garden spots (I.e. Was earthlike)

I played this at TravCon with the author and it was a wonderfully touching game of exploration and discovery. No combat, but doing proper Scouting.

Curious about this Scout ship. Are there deckplans?

Deckplans appeared in Classic Traveller Grand Survey, and Megatraveller World Builder's Handbook. There's a nice fan made one at the link below.

Yes. It's the Donosev-class Scout (400-tons) - again - and as well as being in the book and the sources cited in Mark's reply, it's also appeared in two mongoose volumes - off the top of my head (I'm on holiday and can't check) I think it was Supplement 10 and the second or third Compendium. However, some new three-d models were rendered for this book to create some new images. (Not by me).

Mongoose have also added a deck plan for the Kankurur grav vehicle which look very snazzy, although I prefer my own simpler one!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
