Dungeon Crawl Classics #67: Sailors on the Starless Sea

A Level 0 Adventure

Find out why this is among the most-celebrated adventures for DCC RPG!

Since time immemorial you and your people have toiled in the shadow of the cyclopean ruins. Of mysterious origins and the source of many a superstition, they have always been considered a secret best left unknown by the folk of your hamlet.

But now something stirs beneath the crumbling blocks. Beastmen howl in the night and your fellow villagers are snatched from their beds. With no heroes to defend you, who will rise to stand against the encircling darkness? The secrets of Chaos are yours to unearth, but at what cost to sanity or soul?

An introductory adventure for the Dungeon Crawl Classics Roleplaying Game, Sailors on the Starless Sea pits a mob of 0-level adventurers against the legacy of the Chaos Lords and their corrupted hordes. Delving beneath the crumbling ruins, the characters discover ancient crypts, a starless sea, and an ancient ziggurat, where death and treasure await in equal measure!

Reviews:

  • RPG.net: “Harley Stroh's Sailors on the Starless Sea is a fantastic adventure in the best sense. It is very dangerous, but never in an unfair way.”
  • Swords of Minaria: “For a dusty shelf price of $9.99 for the dead tree version ($6.99 for the PDF), and considering the amount of art in this module, it is hard to pass this by. The stats are generic enough to run the adventure with any OSR game, and (with a little editing for gore) Sailors of the Starless Sea would be an exciting introductory adventure for new players of any age. It is best used, however, to introduce players to DCC RPG, as (much like that tome) the contents are a very evocative old-school primer on how to bring that 1970's heavy metal ballad feel back to your gaming table.”
  •  Tenkar’s Tavern: “Talking about art - the maps are beautiful. Goodman should sell prints of them (with the room/laceration markings removed). Really. I'm not joking. There is more to the included maps then just the maps themselves, and the embellishing artwork is amazing.”
  • Reviews from R'lyeh: "Dungeon Crawl Classics #67: Sailors on the Starless Sea is never less than deadly and dangerous, but always ready to reward good play. It feels like a big scenario, rich in grim and perilous flavour and detail, not a dungeon to be attacked, but to be explored, its secrets to winkled out and perhaps put to use in saving the villagers—and possibly the world."

Silly question, but the page of numbered "Beastmen" images confuses me; do the numbers correspond to anything? I know there are 2 beastmen in area of the Gatehouse, and 6 along with 1 champion in area H making 9 in total, but there's no mention of randomizing them outside of the table on page 7.
Just curious, great product!

There's an additional 26 beastmen later in the module.
If the image you're talking about is the sidebar on page 6, then it's so you can modify and personalize some of the horde of beastmen so they all aren't the same. Just a way to add some additional flavour so your players don't get bored.

Same question. I'm trying to apply the code within the hardcopy I purchased. The cart does not update the price. Can you advise a solution? I see others had this issue about a year ago. Thanks.

I'm trying to redeem the coupon code of my copy and nothing happens. It only says "code redeemed", but I couldn't download the PDF.

For everyone asking: yes, it was solved by DriveThruRPG themselves. I just open a support ticket and they fixed it for me :D

That only appears to be available on the Goodman Games own website - the Artist's Choice Limited Edition Cover. Not sure if it's print or PDF. Follow the link in the box on the right hand side here, under "Publisher Homepage".

I just bought this, and it looks like they updated it to the 20 page version. They just didn't think to update the product description.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
