Romance of the Perilous Land (first edition)

Suggested Price $2.00

ROMANCE OF THE PERILOUS LAND is a game very much inspired by the oldest fantasy roleplaying game created in the 1970s,  but it is also its own creation. Rather than mixing lots of fantasy tropes and world folklore like the original game, Romance of the Perilous Land is firmly set in the world of British folklore, from the stories of King Arthur to the wonderful regional tales found throughout this green and pleasant land. As the name suggests, this is a world of romantic chivalry, but also of great danger posed by thieving brigands, evil knights and greedy giants. Creatures are quite rare and often hidden until they are angered by the machinations of humanity. In the Perilous Land you won’t find hundreds of dragons flocking the sky, but legends of a single Long Worm who has existed since time immemorial. Monsters are beings of wonder and terror, where just a group of mischievous boggarts can be the reason for an entire quest.

Romance of the Perilous Land first edition features:

  • Six classes: Knight, Ranger, Thief, Cunning Folk, Barbarian and Bard
  • A point-based magic system - Cunning Folk can attempt to cast powerful magic above their level, but there could be consequences
  • A full bestiary of creatures from British folkore
  • A simple system that's compatible with OSR adventures
  • Powerful magic weapons and items - not just your +1 sword
Please note that this is the original 1e pdf edition of Romance of the Perilous Land. For the latest edition by Osprey click here.

Is there a PoD or physical print that I can buy anywhere for this 1st Edition book?

Typos:

“Romance of the Perilous Land is firmly set it the world of British folklore”

“Set it” should be “set in.”

“For the latest edition by Osprey click here.” There is no link. It would probably lead to the 256 page version that Christopher B’s linked below.

No biggies, but a wonderful game should have wonderful catalog text!

Thanks for the spot. For some reason Drivethrurpg won't let me add the link. Bah!

This version came out a few years ago and is 51 pages including front/back cover pages--it's only two bucks at the suggested pay-what-want price.

The new version being released today through Osprey (https://ospreypublishing.com/romance-of-the-perilous-land) is 256 pages for $35 in hardback or $24.50 epub/PDF--200 more pages of material. DriveThruRPG has it too (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/297540/Romance-of-the-Perilous-Land-A-Roleplaying-Game-of-British-Folklore).

I don't have any connection to anyone selling it... just happened to find it while browsing today today and am trying to help anyone who might be confused since both versions have the exact same title.

I see Osprey Publishing has a pre-order for a hardcover book of this. Are there any changes between the hardcover and this pdf?

Looking at the video review of Osprey's and comparing it to this one, it looks like Osprey's more fleshed out for the classes (building upon what's here), has more spells and options, has a section covering more settings and timelines, premade NPCs (such as Merlin and Morgan le Fay), and more monsters, plus the artwork appears more cohesive and a little more graphically spruced up. It looks like they kind of changed everything in a sense, adding more flesh to the bones that are here. Troll's game seems more for quick sessions or one-shots (no sweat) where as Osprey's seems more focused on long haul campaigns (and perhaps a little more added crunch).

I recently saw something that the new version is over 200 pages so I feel confident that it is better fleshed out. So I'm hoping to pick up a copy after the holidays.

Hey. This is right. The edition I wrote for Osprey is much bigger, with a full gazetteer, new rules, more monsters, a chronology, talents, revamped classes, backgrounds and more.

Darn. Still no POD here or on Lulu? Is it perhaps still a thing?
Great game. Solid presentation. I certainly hope POD is not outside of a possibility.

The latest is 10 - this is the updated art version. No difference in the written content but some people wanted to see more period art

What, no Clerics? (I know priests are mentioned in the Backgrounds section, but for an Arthurian sort of game shouldn't we have some monks, abbots etc. around? Although I appreciate there can be problems using a version of a real-world religion in our games...)

It's a good point. Clerics are essentially cunning folk with priest backgrounds. You can play that as an abbot if you like, but magic may be frowned upon ;)

Thanks for that, sets the HD etc., and I guess suitably-chosen spells could have a "clerical" interpretation (not seen as "magic", of course!)

Yes, I've just set it up on Lulu at the moment. I've ordered a proof, so I'd imagine this will be up in the next month. Right now I'm working on softcover.

Neither - it doesn't use armour class. It uses armour points (similar to how T&T and The Black Hack does it)

Which one is the newest one? The first file was called "Romance_of_the_Perilous_Land", and now after the update I see files called "RomancePerilousFinal" and "Perilous2". Not sure which is the new version, as they're all the same file size (9.62MB).

The Ranger table on p.10 is different between the two... but both are technically wrong (perilous2 looks like it tried to correct the name of the 5th level class feature, but didn't get the whole last word entered).

I know how it is, I'm just getting used to the DriveThruRPG publisher backend, and have learned that it can be a challenge (I mean no offense to them either, I know full well making a workable system which even newbs like me can use is a tall order). I had to try uploading files a few times, and some things about it I still am not sure I'm getting. My poor purchasers. It's a system we can get used to though right? Please tell me it is?
Anyhow, I bought this one and will have to give it a read once I can finally catch a breath.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
