Disappointing to get the PDF and find no bookmarks and broken hyperlinks in the PDF (when I click on table of contents it just takes me back to PDF cover). Some of the other "leather" PDFs in the series have nice and useful bookmarks, as well as the Pendragon 5.2 and GPC books. But... this sadly does not. Like I said, very disappointing.

Buyer beware. As a source for historical economic history and theory this is excellent. As a system to be added to your campaign, it is barely penciled in. There is no discrete separation between the dissertation-like background material and the game system, leading to a tangled mess of often contradictory and fuzzy terms. The Estate Record sheet bears little to no resemblance to examples given in the text, so you will likely be holding both up to each other in a vain attempt to conjure some kind of coherent picture of the design, while wading through paragraph after paragraph of unhelpful and often largely useless fluff. It reads more like a textbook of medieval economics which strives to keep from making any concrete statements for fear of the wrath of peer review, than any kind of game system. I love your work Stafford, but if I wanted a lecture, I'd audit a class.

This is one of the more entertaining and useful of the books in the Pendragon line. Not only does it provide stats for running an estate using the system but to me its in its fluff and descriptive prose that it really shines. Information on various aspects of society, culture, politics, and organization for nobility and the estate system is in the system. The various example estates are very interesting to read and full of potential plots and campaign elements. Even if you never were planning on running a Pendragon campaign but wanted information on medieval and Arthurian sociopolitical organization in a fun and easy to read format this is for you. I have had the book for months now and it hasn't left my side, I use it whenever I need information on running a noble household in the medieval era for whatever roleplaying system I am using. I would like to repeat that by putting a lot of description and fluff in the book it becomes a million times more useful, interesting, and informative. I give this book as many...See more

do you have Book of the Manor to compare it to? as far as I can tell there's a hierarchically-progressive trio of 'demesne' books (Manor for knights, Estate for lesser nobility and Warlord for [at least Uther's] barons)--but I haven't seen significant clarification as to whether each is entirely discrete from the others.

Estate and Warlord were retooled specifically to work together and is the preferred system.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
