Remember those flashes of inspiration
that electrified your brain when
you first picked up that hardback volume
of monsters all those years ago?

The countless nights you sat up thinking of how to use those monsters,
where to put them, and when your players would meet them? Those unceasing
waves of joy that swam over you and your players as you unleashed
those creatures, critters, beasts and behemoths upon their characters?

Collected herein are over 200 monsters from Abysmal to Zathoa,
instilled with that same spirit, presented in a “dual-stat” format,
and designed to be used with most early editions of the world’s
original role-playing game and comparable retro-clones.

I gotta say, I love everything I get from LeBlanc. I got the free pdf but ordered it in print along with CC2 and PX1 from Lulu. D30 Companions sold me on the quality, the art for the Jenglot is exactly what I was imagining for an encounter for my group and I was sold, sold, sold!

As someone new to OSR can someone explain what this is? Is a it a generic conversion of a previous Dnd book? Is it a completely original work?

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but is this compatible with 2nd edition?

With Linnorms, the HD Adj. is that to the HD total or the roll for each HD? So would a Flame Linnorm with 12HD base at young adult, which has -1 HD Adj, have 11 HD or 12HD-12hp?

That adjustment is to the total number of HD rolled. I would likely listed a hp adjustment as -1hp/HD.

I have not actually purchased this (yet), but looking at the preview offered, I have to say this looks like an excellent resource. My favorite version of D&D is found in the Rules Cyclopedia and Creature Catalogue (1986). This fits perfectly with that edition, and offers a ton of great monsters and information.

Some very attractive monsters in this compendium. Especially because they are low key, and leave room for some ingenuity on the part of the GM. Every bit as good as the original old skool stuff. Loved the Cyclorcs.

New Big Dragon's site shows this product for $2.00. Followed the link, RPGNOW says it's $3.00. I know it's only a buck, but I thought I'd let you know. Leaving a comment here because I couldn't find any contact info for the publisher anywhere.

Love the format, illustrations are awesome and reminiscent of the old school feel without being too amateurish. Love the stats for both 1st edition and BECM and I will be using it for the BECM game. Only issue I have is that it isn't book marked. 94 page with all those monsters needs a nice and speedy way to navigate. Any chance you can get it loaded with bookmarks in the near future? If you need any assistance with that let me know, would be more than willing to help with that if I had either the native file or pdf that wasn't locked down. I bookmark all of my stuff to at least some degree.

You _really_ need to specify which systems the stats are formatted for. The sidebar info is misleading as "d20" led me to believe it was 3e/d20 system, rather than 1e.

OSR (Old School Revival) is only possible under the d20/OGL agreement, thus that is the only way that the publisher can indicate the proper compatibility. If it was 3E or 3.5E compatible, it would indicate that as its edition subsystem.
Personally, I'm going to be using their stuff for 5th Edition. This is such a huge bargain, and very well written, that it's worth converting, or just reading for pleasure. I've picked up most of New Big Dragon's stuf for those same reasons.

The description on the main page says that it's "designed to be used with most early editions of the world’s original role-playing game and comparable retro-clones." That seems to clearly preclude 3e or 3.5e (although you can adapt anything, of course). Yes, the sidebar says "D&D/d20" but the indented material underneath that specifies which subset of the D&D/d20 world it is designed for: "OSR (unofficial/3rd party)." And "OSRIC" and "Labyrinth Lord" are listed above this. Finally, the Full-size Preview indicates the stats are for 0e/1e and BX (that is, Moldvay/Cook Basic/Expert rules).

Ok, I usually consider myself pretty knowledgeable about D&D in general, but which edition is HB ?

That's the acronym I use for Holmes Blue/Holmes Basic. The treasure types are slightly different from the others.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
