Mists of Akuma: Eastern Fantasy Noir Steampunk for Shadow of the Demon Lord

Selected Option:

Almost two centuries ago the lightning-powered ships of Ceramia pierced the skies of Soburin heralding an age of oppression that still marks the lands with the resources stripped from the countryside. Ripped away from a long age of peace and broken by soldiers wielding scientifically advanced weaponry, the warriors of the prefectures were drafted into a distant conflict across the edge of the world and ancient traditions of violence have reawakened a thirst for blood in those few that survive the decaying world. Emperor Hitoshi’s rebellion a decade ago threw down foreign rule but an ancient danger has reappeared to push society to the brink of collapse: the Mists of Akuma.

The corrupting fog transforms those within it into bloodthirsty adeddo-oni, monsters that seek only the rending of flesh and the taste of living meat. Nobles have retreated to the cities dotting the countryside leaving the common folk to face the supernatural haze alone, adding to the undead horde. Nature itself has been perilously wounded and the technology that might save the prefectures is shunned and feared by the Masuto Dynasty and Emperor Hitoshi’s subjects.

Mists of Akuma is an eastern fantasy noir steampunk campaign setting for the Shadow of the Demon Lord RPG. Using new mechanics steeped in eastern lore, the book focuses on providing in-depth urban settings and a diverse array of character options to make truly unique parties of adventurers perfectly suited to survive the decay and desperation in Soburin. Bengoshi (governmental agents) empowered to deputize individuals in service of the Masuto Dynasty are attempting to hold the apocalypse at bay but intrigue and graft are as common and deadly as the corrupting fog, and the ancient threat’s influence is spread all the further by the despair of Emperor Hitoshi’s subjects. Death and corruption are everywhere, and only the devious or strong thrive as the world dies around them.

Can you survive the Mists of Akuma?

In the 250 page Mists of Akuma: Shadow of the Demon Lord rulebook you’ll find...

  • An overview of the recent history of Soburin and basic information about the world including the dangerous Mists of Akuma, rules for traveling the prefectures, and what rigors maddened explorers must overcome to visit the apocalypse that has become of the other continents.

  • Over 100 NPCs and monsters ranging from foreign generals to eastern dragons, powerful bengoshi and underlings from each of the 24 unique clans, and more than two dozen kami, oni, and tsukumogami!

  • Cultural practices and traditions for Soburin inspired by and drawn from eastern lore.

  • Gorgeous cover artwork by Claudio Pozas, interior scene illustrations by Indi Martin and Sara Shijo, and character illustrations by Jacob Blackmon and Nathanael Batchelor!

  • A chapter each for three different cities: the capital of the Imperial Prefecture, Sanbaoshi, the advanced mechanical metropolis of Kyofu, and the traditionalist magic-steeped settlement of Nagabuki.

  • Short stories with gorgeous half page illustrations at the start of each chapter to firmly posit the desperation and diversity inherent to adventuring in Soburin!

  • Details on each of the two dozen clans of the prefectures, including the bengoshi that negotiate on the behalf of each ruling family’s lady or lord and how the Kengen Occupation affected each region of Soburin.

  • 6 maps for the continent and its settlements by cartographers Michael McCarthy, Mike Myler, and Tommi Salama!

  • 16 new races to breathe life into Soburin, making it an exotic and unique world that is eager to shrug off the shackles of western imperialism.

  • Ancestral Blessings (to give adventurers an edge in this unforgiving world) and martial arts stances, 3 new magic traditions and various new spells, 11 new expert paths (including ninja, samurai, and wu-jen!), 4 new master paths (for gun priests, misted ragers, and more), and 8 pages of new equipment that ranges from new armor and weapons to steampunk prostheses and vehicles!

  • Revenge of the Pale Master, an epic 25 page mystery adventure for expert adventurers set in the industrialized city of Kizaki beneath the shadow of an ancient, evil necromancer that has the settlement firmly within his ethereal grasp.

If you aren’t sure if this exciting new campaign setting is for you, download the five free 5e preview PDFs of Mists of Akuma to see what perils await within this deluxe tome!

Dungeon Musings on YouTube talking about this book! https://youtu.be/OrxaIJ1r7Nc?t=1h26m49s

Also for those interested in adventures, I'm halfway through converting the 5 existing modules over to Shadow of the Demon Lord (should all be out by mid-summer 2018).

HAIL!

Are the conversions of other adventures still going forward? I have the SotDl roll20 version of Revenge of the Pale Master but was wondering if there were going to be more starting at a lower level? Or pdf's so I can add them in manually.

Any chance you'll double check the person and place names with a Japanese speaker before final release?

Just off the cuff:

Seinaru, Reikoku-na and Kyusoku-na are adjectives. Hakai-suru, Henko-shimasu and Shinbo-shimasu are verbs. Japanese place names don't work that way. Whoever created those should have done a bit more than type into Google Translate. This is a trainwreck.
Maybe replace with Seichi, Reikoku, Kyusoku, Hakai and Henoko, Shinbo. Kyusoku sounds weird though.

Seikatsu means "everyday life". XXX.

Japanese doesn't have X. Xibusono, Xanzogaku, Xenkasuru etc. are out. You can't just replace K with X. Also Kenka suru is a verb, again.

Sanbaoshi sounds Chinese. "Bao" doesn't exist in Japanese.

"Detchtagi"... sounds awful and unpronouncable. Maybe Dechitagi?

"Suiryoku" means "hydropower". XXX.

"Nesuto" = nest, "Furaito" = Flight....See more

Thanks for the input Martin! The use of Japanese as our primary function for naming places and people in Soburin is not intended to be literal and we did have about 30 students in Japan (and their teacher, the fellow credited as Scholastic Consultant) review the book's manuscript to make sure we didn't inadvertently write (or name) something offensive. They did point out a few that needed amended in order not to offend.
Your well-meaning suggestion to use real Japanese locations was discussed by the design team early on but ultimately not pursued because we felt it would be disrespectful to use them without extensive research (which at the end of the day would add hundreds of hours of work just for naming things, time that was--we feel--well spent on developing the world and mechanics instead).

Moreover this is *not* Japan, it's Soburin (a continent loosely based on Japan and informed by many other eastern cultures). The in-game language is Soburi, which you've picked up on is more of a pidgin...See more

Not my circus, not my monkeys. I might be the first to point this out to you, and I certainly won't be the last, since a Japan-themed RPG product will attract people with a bit of a Japan background and they'll all tell you the same thing.

I won't comment on your "Scholastic Consultant", but let's just say I suggest you don't use them going forward.

If you want some professional advice, please come to this G+ community, where people hang out who professionally translate Japanese TRPGs.

7th Sea had to go through the same process, when their Europe-based Kickstarter backers pretty much took matters in their own hands for the second edition and fixed most of the BS from the first edition. (Not sure if Fauner Pösen is still in the game ... ugh.)

You still have the chance to fix this before it goes to print.

I've said my piece, if you choose to ignore it, good luck. Just hope that...See more

Thanks again for your input Martin! Were this a product about Japan we would definitely take your advice but to be frank it is not. It is and is always presented as an eastern fantasy noir steampunk world. We researched many different eastern cultures and used Japan as the model for our world design, but that does *not* make it a book about Japan (in the same way that Greyhawk is not a setting about Europe).

I apologize if you were offended by my last post but it was made earnestly, as is this one. We really are not selling the product you think we are selling, we are selling a book about eastern fantasy (which is inclusive of many cultures, albeit with more allusions to one in order to achieve a more cogent world). Once again thank you for your comments and although you shared it in a pejorative fashion, thank you for telling your friends about Mists of Akuma. :D

Heyo Kevin! I'm spending this weekend revising the print file again and will have another proof by March, but at this point I'm reticent to say "in March" because I've thought that the images would print correctly several times before, been wrong, and gave people expectations I didn't match. I am diligently working on it though and extremely hopeful for March. Sorry for the wait, I promise it's worth it!

The fourth print came in badly as well, and at this point I'm assessing new ways to go about fixing the build. Hopefully early next year (coinciding with some converted adventures). Sorry for the delay--clearly the printer can feel the evil locked inside the book. Seriously though I am still trying to get it to print correctly and I promise we will get lightning to strike that same spot a second time.

Yis! Getting that dark evil contrast to work right (examples here from the 5E book's print proofs https://i2.wp.com/mikemylerdotcom1.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/moa-print-issue.jpg ) is super difficult but I think I've finally nailed it down again--print files are in processing and after I get a solid proof it'll be up on sale. ^_^

Sorry about the wait and thank you for staying on it!

That's not a bad analogy--my go-to is "2 parts Ravenloft + 1 part Warhammer 40k + 3 parts Afro Samurai". For anyone keen to having a more mundane eastern fantasy setting, we tried to design the world so that you can pull out the steampunk bits without it being an enormous task (obviously things like robotic NPCs and war machine tsukumogami would not fit in Rokugan or what have you).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
